[IYRPsupportgroup] Information about IYRP for pastoralist organisations - call for testimonials

Indeed, Pablo, the team in the ISG working on the new IYRP website is already trying to arrange short testimonials video clips from different regions in the world to bring the voices of rangeland users and other stakeholders to the FAO Committee on Agriculture (COAG) participants in our “online booth” (website) for the COAG - 60-90 seconds (in any case, less than 2 min) conveying the speaker’s views and feelings regarding the importance of rangelands and/or livestock and/or pastoral life and culture – and ideally also mentioning why it would be important to have an IYRP. The clip can be taken with a video camera or a good-quality smartphone. We are asking people to post the clip on YouTube and send the link to us, so that our website team can put it into the respective regional pages on the website.

We already have such testimonials coming in from different regions, but we don’t have anything yet from Central & South America. We also have no testimonials thus far from North Africa & the Middle East, although we hope some will come in this week. We have to get all the materials for the website together by 12 Sept, so in one week’s time. We want to have the “online booth” up and running one week before the COAG meeting starts on 28 Sept, and the webmaster needs some time to make it ready.

A complication is that we would need English subtitles if the speaker does not speak in English. I have been told that there is a programme for subtitling in YouTube but I have not tried it. If we cannot get non-English testimonials with subtitles, we will simply have to put them on the website as they are and hope that at least the COAG country reps from that region can understand them.

If anyone in the ISG can arrange testimonials from these regions - or others - then please do so. You can refer to the attached call that Dana made in Australia for ideas about what should be in it. Of course, Dana has pitched her call to Australians, but the principles will be the same in other regions.

On each regional page, we will probably feature only two testimonials but we will make a link to still more testimonials from the region.

Cheers,
Ann

If plants are introduced, they are managed similarly. Rangelands include natural grasslands, savannas, shrublands, many deserts, tundra, alpine communities, marshes, and wet meadows (SRM 1999).”

The IYRP is a global worldwide initiative for all people whose livelihood depends on rangelands. (Note that the definition of "rangeland" comes from the International Rangeland Congress). For example, the folks herding reindeers do consider themselves as pastoralists (and these are semi-wild animals); also the southern african pastoralists who also have (and manage) wild ruminants in their domain.
