Dear Deans,

I am writing with several updates related to Teaching and Learning plans for AY21, and ask that you share this to faculty and staff to support their planning efforts.  I am tremendously grateful to the hundreds of faculty and staff who contributed to developing and reviewing these plans.  Even as I am daunted by all that we need to do in the 68 days remaining before the Fall Semester begins, I am inspired by the great many creative and thoughtful ideas that have come forward to match the best public health guidance with our teaching, research, service, and extension activities.


  1.  The approved Teaching and Learning Guidelines for AY21 delivery of on-campus degree programs are attached, including a description of the four Class Formats which has been shared to students and a Summary of the key points.  I particularly ask that you review the timeline that Registrar Alex Underwood has laid out in the longer Guidelines document for (a) resolving the teaching modes for each course, and (b) the classroom assignment changes that will follow those decisions.
  2.  We will this week share an administrative directive to campus on the use of Face Coverings on our Campuses, with mandatory use in indoor spaces, including classrooms.  The text is attached (English and Spanish), and signage will follow shortly.  We are working now to develop guidelines for instructors to use in the case of student compliance challenges - these will come to you shortly.
  3.  We will also communicate to the campus this week that we will provide all instruction and assessments via Online / Remote Modes only after Thanksgiving (except in a few exceptional cases) in order to reduce student travel from and to Tucson in November, when both flu and coronavirus are expected to be circulating simultaneously.  Please plan accordingly.
  4.  Finally, I am attaching a graphic with our Guiding Principles for Re-Entry, to support decision making at the departmental and college levels.

The Teaching and Learning Implementation Team, led by Maha Nassar and Rob Stephan (copied herein), is still working through other questions, including guidance for Studio-based and Laboratory-based teaching.  More to follow!

Finally, the recent spike<https://www.azdhs.gov/preparedness/epidemiology-disease-control/infectious-disease-epidemiology/covid-19/dashboards/index.php> in COVID-19 cases in Arizona is of great concern, and reminds us of how very important it is to follow the CDC guidance<https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/prevention.html> for preventing the spread of coronavirus.  We must act together to swiftly set the standard on all our campuses for these public health care measures, and I ask for your support in this regard, even when it is inconvenient or even uncomfortable.  The well-being of our friends and colleagues depends upon it, as does the vitality of the University.
