Tuesday Morning Notes

October 15, 2013

FROM THE DIRECTOR:

This past Saturday on 12 October, we celebrated the first 100 years of the
4-H Youth Development program in Arizona, convening for the celebration at
the UA Maricopa Agricultural Center (MAC). More than 800 people attended,
representing nearly every county in the state, and many sectors of the broad
spectrum representing Arizona. Dr. Kirk Astroth, the faculty and staff from
our Cooperative Extension (CE) offices across the state, 4-H members,
leaders, volunteers, the 4-H Youth Foundation, and many supporters
contributed to an outstanding event celebrating this important centennial of
4-H in our state.

AZ4-HCentennialPhoto-BI want to congratulate the Arizona 4-H Centennial
Planning Committee and the many people who joined them in the efforts to
plan and organize this event. They did an excellent job and all of the
participants benefited from the displays, fund raising auctions, good music,
and a fine program on a beautiful October day commemorating this important
milestone. The Extension faculty and staff who went above and beyond and
who deserve special thanks for their months of contributions and hours of
work prior to and after the event are: Vic Jimenez, Eric Larsen, Susan
Pater, Bryan Chadd, Curt Peters, Jerry Olson, Mike Hauser, Kim McReynolds,
Amy Parrott, Tina Christianson, Sandra Saad, Kim Gressley, Dusty Murdoch,
Connie Forsyth, and Jeff Schalau. Key 4-H volunteers who helped were Janice
Bryson and Denise Warmkowski. It is also important to recognize Dr. Bob
Roth, the Director at MAC and all of the staff at MAC who provided the
excellent facility and accommodations to conduct this event.

>From the humble beginnings in 1913 in Chandler, Arizona this youth
development organization has grown over the past 100 years to positively
affect the lives of many thousands of people. We enjoy the fruits of the
dedication and labors of many people across Arizona over the past 100 years
who have provided the foundation to the strong and effective organization
that 4-H represents today.

As we look forward to the next 100 years of 4-H in Arizona, CALS CE is
strongly committed to this youth development organization and proud to be a
part of this system that develops the youth of this state in a very positive
and constructive manner.

All the 4-H Centennial BBQ participants gathered to form the pattern of a
four-leafed clover, the national symbol of 4-H, with each leaf representing
one of the four H's. A photograph taken from a lift provided by MAC
commemorated the moment and the commitment to education and youth
development by the UA and 4-H participants since the founding of the state's
4-H program in 1913. Photo by Eric Larson & Gerald Olson.

CONDOLENCES:

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of Peter Warren's son
(Lane Warren). He passed away Saturday after an accident on his way to the
homecoming dance. A charitable donation will be made to a reforestation
project in Lane's name. If you would like to participate, please send your
donation to Stacey Bealmear <mailto:staceyb at cals.arizona.edu> at the Yuma
County Extension Office (2200 W. 28th Street, Suite 102, Yuma, AZ,
85364-6936).

FOCUS ON 4-H:

Commemorative Booklets for Hall of Fame - As you read above, our Arizona 4-H
Centennial BBQ and Celebration was a big success and everyone seemed to
enjoy themselves out at Big MAC. A centerpiece of the day was the 4-H Hall
of Fame induction, and we have a few of the commemorative booklets left
after the event. Undoubtedly, some counties will probably like some
additional copies, recipients may want more, or perhaps you just want a few
extras to share with others in your county. If you would like copies, Kirk
Astroth will be bringing them to the November CED meeting. Let him know by
November 7.

UA Cares Campaign--Consider Donating to the 4-H Camp - As you have heard,
the UA Cares Campaign is underway through November 22. I encourage you to
consider making your contribution to support the James 4-H Camp on Mingus
Mountain. The UA Foundation account for the camp is #20-10-1996 and you
need to include this with your pledge or contribution. Also, if you search
the UA Foundation website for a gift opportunity, you must type in "4-H
Camp" to find us. Thanks for the support!

Arizona 4-H Sales Have New Shopping Cart System - Arizona 4-H Sales,
available through CALSmart, has moved to a new shopping cart system. The
new site is hosted by 3dcart, a commercial vendor that is becoming popular
on campus. This change offers an updated and modern storefront look, better
sales and inventory tracking and increased security. There will also be new
features, including more complete publication descriptions with cover
photos, mailing lists, product cross-selling, featured products, coupons and
tiered discounts, and affiliate programs opportunities. The new URL is
https://4harizona.3dcartstores.com (and the old URL,
http://cals.arizona.edu/4hsales, will redirect visitors to the new site).
