Tuesday Morning Notes

October 22, 2013

FROM THE DIRECTOR:

The Associate Director for Agriculture and Natural Resources (AD ANR)
position in Cooperative Extension (CE) has been recently vacated with Dr. Ed
Martin's new appointment as the County Director for Maricopa County CE. Ed
has done an excellent job in this capacity and I very much appreciate his
many contributions to our administrative effort in CALS CE and it is clear
that I have learned a lot about this AD position in my work with Dr. Martin.

With Ed's departure the need for this position has been considered as well
as other possible arrangements with the Extension Administration Team (EAT).
Following a considerable review and hearing the perspectives of many others,
I have decided to move forward in pursuit of a replacement for this AD ANR
position. The AD ANR position is needed to compliment the EAT group efforts
to provide the necessary faculty and staff support to advance the strategic
goals for CE; particularly in relation to program coordination, integration
of programs, and the proper orientation of resources across the college and
state to help manage the implementation and direction of ANR programs. This
position will be a split assignment between the administrative duties
associated with the AD position and the incumbent's programmatic
responsibilities. The absolute split will be an approximate 50/50
appointment but dependent on the incumbent and the nature of their program
and capacities.

I am now openly soliciting internal (CALS) applications and nominations for
this AD ANR position. Ed Martin has agreed to work with us through a
transition process but we need to identify an incumbent to the position and
make an appointment by the end of the calendar year.

FOCUS ON FACULTY:

The National Network for Sustainable Living Education (NNSLE) recently
released a publication titled
<http://collaborate.extension.org/mediawiki/files/3/38/Walking_Our_Talk_fina
l_092713.pdf> "Walking Our Talk: A Brief Look at Extension Survey Responses
>From Across the United States" about a survey conducted of Extension offices
around the country on the degree to which they implement sustainability
practices - like recycling, energy efficiency, etc. Mark Apel participated
in this survey as a respondent as well as a reviewer of the document.
Arizona was well-represented in the survey respondents.

the second and final round of competition. Led by Eric Larsen and John
Whiteside of Raytheon, our proposal is called "The Totally Amazing,
Incredible Food Lift." Collaborators on our proposal include Raytheon

the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA); and Kirk
Astroth, Director of Arizona 4-H. We are very excited to have been selected
as one of the 3 finalists and look forward to submitting a full proposal at
the end of November. We hope to prevail and bring recognition to the U of A
