The Graduate Program in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems at the University of Rhode Island is hiring a PhD student with multi-year funding from Fall 2023 for a project on alternative urban food provisioning networks
Project PI and PhD Advisor: John Taylor
URI CO-PIs: Patrick Baur, Julie Keller, Melva Treviño Peña
Funding: This appointment includes a tuition waiver and research stipend of up to $26,000/year for up to three years with summer funding for three years.
Study purpose: Immigrant communities and communities of color are more likely to have limited food access and to experience food insecurity. These communities are also more likely to engage in self-provisioning through growing, fishing, and foraging for cultural reasons or to address gaps in conventional food systems. In this multi-institution, multidisciplinary project, we seek to address this gap by mapping the alternative food provisioning networks of immigrant communities and communities of color in three U.S. East Coast cities—Providence, RI; Baltimore, MD; and Washington, DC—to better understand the dynamics of these networks, to measure their contributions to urban social-ecological systems, and to identify the factors contributing to or impeding their success in ecosystem services provisioning, with a focus on food production.
The successful candidate will receive training in multidisciplinary methods in the social and natural sciences and will supervise data collection and analysis activities, which will include conducting and analyzing data from qualitative interviews with urban farmers and gardeners and ethnobotanical surveys of their sites.
Project Period: 8/2023 - 8/2026
Project Sites/Collaborations: University of Rhode Island, University of Maryland College Park, University of the District of Columbia
Preferred qualifications:
* Background in the social, natural, or agricultural sciences
*
Interest in multidisciplinary methods including qualitative social science methods
*
Interest in urban agriculture and urban food systems
*
Strong communication skills (in written and spoken English)
* Native fluency in Spanish or another non-English language spoken by urban agriculturalists in the study areas
PhD dissertation topic: We anticipate that the project will generate a wealth of data and that the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop a unique dissertation topic congruent with the study purpose in collaboration with the co-PIs.
Application Process and Deadline: Interested students should contact Dr. John Taylor at jr_taylor at uri.edu<mailto:jr_taylor at uri.edu> and include a CV and brief expression of interest by March 31, 2023.
