Masters position in post-fire plant ecology and restoration in the Great Basin at the University of Nevada, Reno

The masters student (M.S.) will work with Stephanie Yelenik and Alexandra Urza at the US Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station, and Bob Shriver at the University of Nevada-Reno. Our labs use a combination of field monitoring, field and greenhouse experiments, soil studies, remote sensing, and mathematical and statistical modeling to understand plant community ecology, plant-soil interactions, invasive species impacts, and restoration best practices to help inform management decisions.

The student will lead a project investigating how the density and timing of post-fire reseeding efforts interacts with interannual variability in temperature and rainfall to affect restoration success. The project takes place in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) in Reno, NV, though sites and questions can be expanded to fit the student's interests. The student will lead fieldwork data collection, lab and greenhouse work, data management and analysis. The position would begin in Spring 2023.
The ideal candidates for the positions have previous field ecological research and data analysis experience (e.g. R, math/statistics coursework), are highly self-motivated, comfortable working in sometimes remote field sites, and have a strong interest in being a part of a collaborative team. Position is fully funded, with stipend of at least $2000 per month.

If interested, please contact Dr. Stephanie Yelenik at stephanie.yelenik at usda.gov<mailto:stephanie.yelenik at usda.gov> with the following documents combined into a single PDF file: (1) A one-page cover letter briefly describing your research interests and research experience (2) your resume/CV including contact information for at least two professional references, and (3) unofficial transcripts. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until June 15.

UNR Graduate Program Information:
Candidates will be admitted through Natural Resources and Environmental Science (NRES) graduate program. This program is part of the UNR Graduate School and students are encouraged to read through the program specific and graduate school websites for more information about eligibility, admissions, and life in Reno.

UNR is a Carnegie classified R1 institution with a wonderful community of basic and applied ecologists, and active collaborations with multiple government research agencies. Reno is at the western edge of the Great Basin and base of the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains with incredible access to outdoor recreational activities including skiing, climbing, hiking, and mountain biking. We are ~45 minutes from Lake Tahoe, 2.5 hours from Yosemite and Lassen National Parks, and 3.5 hours from San Francisco Bay Area. Reno also has a diverse artistic and cultural community with much to offer.
