Subject: APRM for Students
Dear URME coaches and others
The SRM BOD approved updated language regarding the Associate Professional in Range Management (APRM) (attached). As you can see this opens the pathway for all of your students – not just those that scored in the top 10% of URME.
Students can now apply for APRM as recent graduates (or even as near graduates) and be certified as APRM if they meet most of the requirements of CPRM. (If they do not yet meet enough requirements, the CPRM committee will provide a pathway to certification so they know just what they need).
If they were in the top 10% of URME and meet the other requirements, the test will be considered complete and they can just wait for their experience to accrue. If they did not score in the top 10%, they can apply and then take the test during the 5 year experience period. I encourage them to take the CPRM test soon after taking the URME test – they are likely to get a passing grade on the CRPM exam if they did well on URME – even without scoring a top 10%.
Students who did not take URME can also apply for APRM. They can then take the CPRM test when they are closer to being in school and practiced on taking tests. They would then just need to get the experience.
Once approved as APRM, young professionals can include the Associate certification on their resumes, applications, and at their jobs. SRM hopes that this provides a competitive advantage to APRMs and provides a pathway to full certification.
Please point out to your students that SRM has waived their biennial renewal fee for 5 years after graduation. This is an encouragement for young professionals to apply for (and attain) APRM status at graduation. As chair, I offer that any of your URME students who scored in the top 10% can apply even before graduation (their APRM will be on hold until graduation and completion of other requirements).
Any students that are near graduation should also be encouraged to apply. If they need to take the CPRM exam, it is possible to have a proctored exam at a university. If they pass the exam and other requirements, they will receive APRM status upon graduation and can use that information in their job hunt.
Please also reach out to any of your former students who qualify for APRM (or CPRM). As you will see in the updated language, SRM now offers a pathway to certification for non-traditional students and those with non-traditional range career paths.
While you are at it, please submit your own CPRM application and join SRM’s certification program. If you are scared of the CRPM test, apply as a APRM and we will help get you to full certification along the way.
Please help us spread the word through your program and outside that program. We are working to update the new pathway on the SRM website, please watch for more information there.
Thanks
Jack
