1. 2018-2019 CALS Ambassadors: New Member Recruitment
Are you passionate about your major? Do you enjoy meeting new people? Are you looking for a unique professional development opportunity? If so, apply to become a student Ambassador in the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences (CALS)! As the face of the College, and often times of the University, Ambassadors volunteer their time to connect prospective students to academic opportunities in CALS and the UA.
2018-19 CALS Ambassador Application<https://cals.arizona.edu/events/cals-ambassadors-new-member-recruitment>
With its 25-year tradition, the CALS Ambassador Program is recognized as one of three prestigious leadership programs in the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences. Members develop an enhanced sense of professional self-efficacy through competency-based learning focused on leadership, presentation, interpersonal and organizational skills. While the application process is competitive, successful applicants will become student leaders in the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences, will receive a 100% Engagement notation, and, upon graduation, will be welcomed into the robust network of CALS Ambassador Alumni.
Read the CALS Ambassador new member recruitment announcement<https://cals.arizona.edu/events/cals-ambassadors-new-member-recruitment> for member requirements, application materials, application timeline, and additional information. A complete application is due by Wednesday, August 22, 2018.

1. HWRS 350 (Principles of Hydrology) class still has open seats! (see attached flyer)
HWRS 350 Principles of Hydrology is a great class (formerly HWRS 250 - requirements are the same, only the course number has changed!), now with 100% Engagement notation (Professionalism and Interdisciplinarity), and students gain a large number of skills they can list on their résumés, including:
* Stream gaging with USGS
* Flume measurements of stream discharge
* Use of rating curves
* Double- and single-ring infiltration experiments
* Water quality testing
* Aquifer recovery (pumping recovery) test
* Soil moisture sampling (gravimetric & volumetric)
* Bulk density sampling
* Column experiments to determine Q and K
* Double mass curves for precipitation
* Hypsometric method of precipitation estimation across topography
PLUS, I now implement a flipped class one class period per week, where students work together on homework problem sets, with the support of the teaching assistant and instructor. I tried it last year and students really appreciated it, and overall student scores were higher as a result.
Questions? Please contact me: Dr. Martha P.L. Whitaker, Ph.D. | Professor of Practice, Hydrology

1. ATMO 455/555: Introduction to Atmospheric and Hydrology Remote Sensing
Want to learn how satellite and airborne remote sensing is used to study our watery home from space? See the course information below for more details!
[cid:image001.png at 01D43557.CB107FB0][cid:image002.png at 01D43557.CB107FB0]
ATMO 455/555: Introduction to Atmospheric and Hydrology Remote Sensing
[455/555; MWF 1pm-1:50pm Chavez Bldg, Rm 302]
The use of satellite and airborne observation to study the Earth is a fast-growing field. A comprehensive knowledge on our watery home without such data from space is impossible. This course provides an excellent opportunity for students to become familiar with several Earth science satellite missions, including those from NASA. We will get familiar with remote sensing fundamentals, different types of remote sensing data, several satellite platforms, and their sensors to study the Earth’s water cycle, retrieval basis, and hydrologic variables estimated from space. While focusing on remote sensing of precipitation and cloud, we will discuss a wide range of topics that include remote sensing of storms, soil moisture, evapotranspiration, water storage, drought, and fire. We will also discuss how such remote sensing observations can be evaluated using ground observations, and how they are used individually or in combination to address some of the existing challenges in Atmospheric science, hydrology, and water resources. The course does not need any specific prerequisite, so please ignore those stated in the course catalog and UAccess. A general knowledge about the Earth’s water cycle and familiarity with programing is desired. The course will provide additional information about mission design, and the steps often taken to go from an idea to a full mission based on the experience of the instructor who has worked for more than 8 years at NASA.
