From farm laborers to restaurant workers, over one-third of the US workforce is employed in the food industry. Labor is a critical component of our food system, yet is often overshadowed by concerns about consumer safety and the environment. Laborers involved in food production, processing, distribution, retail and service are often subject to unsafe working conditions and low wages.
The Food Security and Social Justice Network<https://fssjn.wordpress.com/> (FSSJN) believes that a just food system must also be just for the people who bring food to the table at every step of the food chain. FSSJN is hosting a Food Labor panel to bring together faculty, students, and community members to discuss the challenges facing workers in the food chain and pathways toward a more just food system for all.
We hope that you can join us for a lively discussion of food labor issues over a lunch of Tucson Tamales. If you have any questions please be in touch
The Food Labor panel will feature:
Abby Rosen: Chef and Culinary, Job and Life Skill Instructor with Caridad Community Kitchen, a program of the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona in Tucson.
Jill Guernsey de Zapien: Associate Dean for Community Programs at the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health.
Christina Greene: PhD candidate in the School of Geography and Development at the University of Arizona.
César López: a local farmer and activist currently based out of Ambos Nogales
