Graduate seminar for Fall 2022 (ECOL 596W)

Course title: How to publish papers and get a job

Credit hours: 2

Meeting: Once per week, for 1:20 minutes

Instructor: John J. Wiens

Goal and course format: This course will cover how one gets a job after getting a Ph.D., focusing primarily on academic jobs. The first part of the course will focus on what qualifications are needed for different types of jobs (e.g. teaching university, research university, other). Hint: this will often require publishing papers in good journals. The second and longest part of the course will focus on publishing papers and designing publishable research. We will discuss research design, types of papers, the mechanics of paper writing, choosing journals, and the process of submitting, revising, and publishing papers. The third part of the course will focus on the details of getting a tenure-track job. This will include where and when to apply, preparing application materials, interviewing, and negotiating.

Time and place: TBA, based on an organizational meeting with students who sign up for the class, during the first week of classes.

Target audience: Ph.D. and Master's students in EEB and related areas.
