McGinnies Graduate Scholarship in Arid Land Studies
A Graduate Scholarship in Arid Lands Studies was established in 1985 by the faculty of the Office of Arid Lands Studies, University of Arizona, in honor of Dr. William G. McGinnies, our founder. The intent of the McGinnies Graduate Scholarship is to provide additional support to graduate students whose dissertation research concerns physical and biological processes in the world's arid and semiarid lands. The annual scholarship award is $2,500 and is celebrated with a luncheon at the historic Arizona Inn and will also give the annual McGinnies lecture to the SNRE community.
Eligibility: Any University of Arizona doctoral student is eligible. All recipients must be approved by the Office of Student Financial Aid.
Selection Criteria: Award is made on the basis of materials submitted by applicants, which (1) indicates their achievements and future as scholars, and (2) demonstrates significant contribution of ongoing research to understanding environmental processes and informing management of arid and semiarid lands.
Application: Applications should consist of (1) a letter of application of no more than 1000 words describing the student's research interests, their achievements to-date, and a concise description of their dissertation research and its broader relevance; (2) a curriculum vitae; and (3) two letters of recommendation (including one from the major advisor). It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that letters are received before the application deadline. For a list of previous recipients, including their dissertation topics, subsequent careers, and current whereabouts, visit http://snre.arizona.edu/academics/mcginnies<https://arizona.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=af018f756d1ccbea4673d3677&id=5a0530ce4b&e=f446cbb14c>
Deadline: All application materials must be submitted no later than 5:00pm on December 6th, 2018. Review of applications for the 2018 awards will begin January, 2019.

Early Voting Site
The Associated Students of the University of Arizona, in conjunction with the Pima County Recorder’s Office, will be hosting an early voting site on the UA campus for anyone who is registered to vote in Pima County.
Early voting begins Monday, Oct. 15, and will run through Friday, Nov. 2 in the ASUA Office, located in room 325W on the third floor of the Student Union Memorial Center, just above the UA Bookstore. The location will be open on weekdays only from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and signs will direct voters to the exact location of the office.
The ASUA is tasked with serving, engaging and empowering the student body and campus community, and recognizes the significant benefit to students and the Tucson community in offering an on-campus voting site.
ASUA officials encourage all eligible voters, regardless of partisan status, to utilize the resources at their disposal, including the UA early voting site. LGBTQ+ Students in Bioscience
Thank you for taking the time to read this call for volunteers. I am seeking participants in a study to understand more about the experiences of LGBTQ+ students in the biosciences.
I’m looking for undergraduate and graduate students and alumni who have, at some point, declared a major in a bioscience field while at the University of Arizona. I’m not currently seeking biomedical students, so as long as your degree program does not terminate in a professional degree, you may be considered as a participant for this project.
I also ask that participants self-identify as LGBTQ+. If that’s you, then please consider filling out the brief intake survey available here<https://arizona.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=af018f756d1ccbea4673d3677&id=a137b88a93&e=f446cbb14c> (or, if the embedded link is not available, https://uarizona.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8IlKTv55Vjc0tSd<https://arizona.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=af018f756d1ccbea4673d3677&id=23450004b3&e=f446cbb14c>).
If you choose to complete the intake survey, I may ask you to participate in a one-on-one interview and/or a focus group about your experiences. I’m particularly interested in folks who both have remained in the biosciences and those who have left the biosciences for another field or discipline.
To participate, you must be (or must have been) affiliated with the University of Arizona as a student in the biosciences and you must be over 18 years old. Your responses to the intake survey will be kept completely confidential.
Please contact me if you have any questions or comments at tonyrcolella at email.arizona.edu<mailto:tonyrcolella at email.arizona.edu>.

Parent Focus Group
GPSC and Campus Rec are working together to find out what students with families need on campus!
Focus groups are being coordinated for the end of October/beginning of November to find out what kind of family programs and support is needed at the University of Arizona. Diversity in the Classroom
This October, we’re offering four workshops on how instructors can create more inclusive classrooms that offer practical tips and strategies. If you attend all four workshops, you earn a “Leader in Classroom Diversity & Inclusion” certificate. Please see the attachment or the Diversity in the Classroom<https://arizona.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=af018f756d1ccbea4673d3677&id=cd17a09e36&e=f446cbb14c> webpage to learn more about the workshops and the certificate. These workshops are open to all graduate students, postdocs, and faculty.
The workshops occur on Wednesdays in Oct from 3-4:30 and are delivered by experts from across campus. The workshops have been improved based on prior feedback. Because these workshops are highly interactive with time for small group discussions, we do not currently record them or offer them remotely.
Given that mentoring is so beneficial, please also note that all graduate students, postdocs, and faculty are eligible to create free accounts for the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD)<https://arizona.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=af018f756d1ccbea4673d3677&id=011c8aacf8&e=f446cbb14c>. This nationally recognized organization provides online career development and mentoring resources that can increase success with publications and securing external funding, increase confidence as a researcher and scholar, lead to healthier relationships with departmental colleagues, and provide external mentors, sponsors, and collaborators.
If you have questions or comments, please email me at lahunter at email.arizona.edu<mailto:lahunter at email.arizona.edu>.
