Student loans and other forms of debt are a reality for many graduate students and postdoctoral scholars, but with the right approach and planning, loans and other forms of debt do not have to be overwhelming. Join Scott Bennett, Executive Director of the TCI Foundation, for a talk about best practices and strategies for managing debt and budgeting for success.
Diversity in the Classroom
This October, we’re offering four workshops on how instructors can create more inclusive classrooms that offer practical tips and strategies. If you attend all four workshops, you earn a “Leader in Classroom Diversity & Inclusion” certificate. Please see the attachment or the Diversity in the Classroom<https://arizona.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=af018f756d1ccbea4673d3677&id=1b27799bcb&e=bf9d96053d> webpage to learn more about the workshops and the certificate. These workshops are open to all graduate students, postdocs, and faculty.
The workshops occur on Wednesdays in Oct from 3-4:30 and are delivered by experts from across campus. The workshops have been improved based on prior feedback. Because these workshops are highly interactive with time for small group discussions, we do not currently record them or offer them remotely.
Given that mentoring is so beneficial, please also note that all graduate students, postdocs, and faculty are eligible to create free accounts for the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD)<https://arizona.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=af018f756d1ccbea4673d3677&id=331a8a13f0&e=bf9d96053d>. This nationally recognized organization provides online career development and mentoring resources that can increase success with publications and securing external funding, increase confidence as a researcher and scholar, lead to healthier relationships with departmental colleagues, and provide external mentors, sponsors, and collaborators.
If you have questions or comments, please email me at lahunter at email.arizona.edu<mailto:lahunter at email.arizona.edu>.

Mitigating Unconscious Bias Workshop
Monday, October 15, 12 PM to 1:30 PM: Mitigating Unconscious Bias Workshop: What
Graduate Students Can Do
The Graduate Center and the Office of Diversity and Inclusive Excellence are excited to announce an upcoming workshop, ‘Mitigating Unconscious Bias: What Graduate Students Can Do.’ The workshop is free of charge. Lunch is provided, and space is limited to 40 in-person participants. We will also have an option for people to attend remotely through Zoom. Please register online at: http://bit.ly/oct15unconsciousbias<https://arizona.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=af018f756d1ccbea4673d3677&id=53a782a616&e=bf9d96053d>. A full description of the workshop is provided below.
As a graduate student, you have multiple roles. Sometimes you’re the subordinate, while other times you are the lead. Navigating these situations can be challenging, and the impact of unconscious bias may make the outcomes more difficult or less effective. While unconscious bias is not intentionally malicious, it can certainly get in the way of our best efforts to promote and leverage the benefits of diversity as well as the impact of the work we do. This workshop will examine how unconscious bias can influence the workplace and classroom and how graduate students can respond. We will share research-based strategies for addressing unconscious biases and micro-aggressions, and we will explore strategies that reduce the impact of our own unconscious biases.
Office Hours with President Robbins
Students may access signing up for office hours by visiting the contact page on the Executive Office of the President’s website: https://president.arizona.edu/contact-us<https://arizona.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=af018f756d1ccbea4673d3677&id=d825491f62&e=bf9d96053d>
Student office hours are a way for the President to listen to students, their needs, and identify what values drive our students while being more accessible to the student body.
Due to the high interest, we are asking that students submit an online request to attend President Robbins’ Student Office Hours. Please note, you are required to provide a topic of discussion for President Robbins’ Office Hours. Any topic that would be better handled by another department will be referred to the unit best equipped to assist you. After review, requests for the President’s Office Hours are scheduled in the order in which they are received; you will receive a confirmation email outlining your scheduled time.
In order to ensure that as many students as possible have the opportunity to speak with the President, there are three time slots per date, with meetings running approximately fifteen minutes each. Students are welcome to attend individually or in groups up to three people. All members of group meetings must be present for your group to be considered “present.” You must be a current University of Arizona student to register for President Robbins’ Office Hours.
Meetings will take place on the second floor of Old Main, and attendees will be asked to check in with the reception desk in the Executive Office of the President. We understand that everyone’s time is valuable; please arrive ten minutes before your scheduled appointment. Should something unexpected come up and you are no longer able to make your scheduled time, please call Presidential Events at 520-626-4349 or presrsvp at email.arizona.edu<mailto:presrsvp at email.arizona.edu>.
