Student Showcase 2019: Call for Judges and Student Applicants
CALL FOR JUDGES:
The Graduate and Professional Student Council would like to invite you to be a judge for the Student Showcase 2019, which will take place Wednesday, February 13th at the UA Mall.The Student Showcase is the largest student-run research exhibition here at the University of Arizona!
This year, judges will need to be available from 8:30 am until 12:00 pm on Wednesday, February 21st. Breakfast will be available beginning at 7:45am in Student Union (room TBD) and judge’s orientation will start at 8:30 am. Judging panels are composed of graduate students, faculty, staff, and Tucson community members. After the orientation breakfast, the judging panels will move on to the UA mall to the Showcase tents to begin judging projects. Each panel will score around nine projects. In addition to breakfast, lunch will be provided for all judges.
Arrangements will be made for free parking for the off-campus judges.
The five judging categories are as follows (categories this year are based on the project topic, not the academic discipline):
Communication and Expression
* Research that involves compilation, analysis, and manipulation of data, ideas, and/or methods of sharing information. (i.e. media, citizen science, pedagogy, etc. )
Community, Culture, and Society
* Research regarding social, economic, cultural, and/or political issues. (i.e. community initiatives, language development, social justice, public policy, etc.)
Technology and Innovation
* Research producing advancements or novel techniques/methods, or entrepreneurial endeavors. May incorporate engineering of devices or utilize digital/computer technologies. (i.e. app development, software/hardware, digital humanities, innovative startups, etc.)
Human Health
* Research impacting the well-being of humans at the individual, community, and global levels. (i.e. Healthcare policy, mental health developments, medical devices, insects as a form of protein, etc.)
Environmental Impact
* Research confronting environmental issues and concerns, anywhere on the local to global spectrum. (i.e. sustainability projects, natural disasters, pollution mitigation, etc.)

This is a chance for undergraduate and graduate students from all departments across campus to prove their exceptional talents by displaying their research to their peers, faculty, and the University of Arizona community.

Travel Grants
DEADLINE TOMORROW! Apply for funding to cover travel at any point during the same fiscal year as your application (i.e. 07/01/2018 to 06/30/2018). Up to $750 is available for domestic travel, and up to $1000 is available for international travel! This is your last chance to apply until the February 1st deadline, but don’t forget that you can apply during any of the four rounds to cover travel that occurs in the same fiscal year (07/01/2018 to 06/30/2018).

JUDGES NEEDED: Want to learn what makes the best application for a GPSC ReaP or POD Grant? Want to add a great service/volunteerism line to your CV or resume too? You can do both of those at the same time from the comfort of your couch (or, more likely, your lab/office/cubicle/study carrel....) by volunteering to judge for the GPSC Research and Projects Grants and the GPSC Professional Opportunities Development Grants! No experience is necessary-- we'll provide all the training you need to accurately and fairly assess proposals. Time commitment is about 1-3 hours per month. ROUND TWO of ReaP and POD Grants is now underway!
ReaP grants offer up to $1000 in funding to qualified U of A graduate and professional students to partially or completely fund scholarly research projects. You can use a ReaP grant to cover the costs of lab equipment, research software, archival fees, subject compensation, and more! Early Voting Site
The Associated Students of the University of Arizona, in conjunction with the Pima County Recorder’s Office, will be hosting an early voting site on the UA campus for anyone who is registered to vote in Pima County.
Early voting begins Monday, Oct. 15, and will run through Friday, Nov. 2 in the ASUA Office, located in room 325W on the third floor of the Student Union Memorial Center, just above the UA Bookstore. The location will be open on weekdays only from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and signs will direct voters to the exact location of the office.
The ASUA is tasked with serving, engaging and empowering the student body and campus community, and recognizes the significant benefit to students and the Tucson community in offering an on-campus voting site.
ASUA officials encourage all eligible voters, regardless of partisan status, to utilize the resources at their disposal, including the UA early voting site. McGinnies Graduate Scholarship in Arid Land Studies
A Graduate Scholarship in Arid Lands Studies was established in 1985 by the faculty of the Office of Arid Lands Studies, University of Arizona, in honor of Dr. William G. McGinnies, our founder. The intent of the McGinnies Graduate Scholarship is to provide additional support to graduate students whose dissertation research concerns physical and biological processes in the world's arid and semiarid lands. The annual scholarship award is $2,500 and is celebrated with a luncheon at the historic Arizona Inn and will also give the annual McGinnies lecture to the SNRE community.
Eligibility: Any University of Arizona doctoral student is eligible. All recipients must be approved by the Office of Student Financial Aid.
Selection Criteria: Award is made on the basis of materials submitted by applicants, which (1) indicates their achievements and future as scholars, and (2) demonstrates significant contribution of ongoing research to understanding environmental processes and informing management of arid and semiarid lands.
Application: Applications should consist of (1) a letter of application of no more than 1000 words describing the student's research interests, their achievements to-date, and a concise description of their dissertation research and its broader relevance; (2) a curriculum vitae; and (3) two letters of recommendation (including one from the major advisor). It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that letters are received before the application deadline. LGBTQ+ Students in Bioscience
Thank you for taking the time to read this call for volunteers. I am seeking participants in a study to understand more about the experiences of LGBTQ+ students in the biosciences.
I’m looking for undergraduate and graduate students and alumni who have, at some point, declared a major in a bioscience field while at the University of Arizona. I’m not currently seeking biomedical students, so as long as your degree program does not terminate in a professional degree, you may be considered as a participant for this project.
I also ask that participants self-identify as LGBTQ+. Parent Focus Group
The Graduate Professional Student Council is holding a focus group with graduate student and PhD parents to identify, understand, and discuss family programming needs at the University of Arizona. We need your help! If you are a parent or caretaker, we want to hear from you about your experience on campus.
The focus group is being held Wednesday November 7th from 12-1PM, at the Campus Recreation PACR Room. All participants will receive a $10 gift card and complimentary lunch.
Additionally, Campus Recreation is hosting a mini "kids camp" for any children who attend with their parents, so children are welcome. Parking passes are available for participants who would otherwise be unable to attend.
