[Plsgs] BioCATS - Informal Journal Club

Hello fellow graduate students!


We are excited to invite you to join our informal “journal club,” geared towards learning current scientific techniques and experimental approaches. We are calling this informal meeting Biological Current Approaches, Techniques, and Stuff, or BioCATS. These meeting will be student-led presentations for other students. No faculty will be present to allow for an informal environment and encourage discussion among students.

With these meetings, we hope to (1) provide junior students the opportunity to learn experimental approaches and techniques from senior students that utilize those skills, (2) increase interaction between grad students from different levels and departments, and (3) allow students the opportunity to practice talks or mock comprehensive exams. 

Meetings will be held once a month, on a Friday afternoon, from 4-5pm. Following these meetings, we will walk to Happy Hour to continue discussion and interaction among students from different programs. Happy Hour locations will alternate between Speedway and University-based bars. 

The first BioCATS meeting will be held at 4pm on October 26th in Room 119 of the Integrated Learning Center (ILC). The ILC is located under the mall at the center of campus.

We invite suggestions for topics of interest and/or volunteers to present - if you have a suggestion, or would like to volunteer to present, please contact us no later than Wednesday, October 17th. Additionally, feel free to invite your labs – this meeting is open to all interested graduate students, post-docs, lab techs, and undergraduate students.
