Subject: Updates For Faculty from the ALVSCE Faculty Council

Dear Faculty-

I am writing with some updates from the ALVSCE Faculty Council.

First- Please save the date. ALVSCE Faculty Council is partnering with the ALVSCE DEI Council to host 3 more faculty coffee hours this semester. They will be 2/14, 3/28, and 4/23, 9-10 in ENR2 Slot Canyon Café (see flyer attached). All ALVSCE faculty are welcome to attend, first beverage is on the house. The purpose of these coffee hours is to foster sense of belonging among faculty and create cross-college networking opportunities.

Second- The CALES Budget Working Group delivered their initial recommendations last week (attached). Important to note from the working group’s recommendations: “…our initial recommendations discussed in this memo reflect conversations and consensus of committee members before the CFO John Arnold and President Robbin’s updated plan was released on January 29th. Although our recommendations may result in savings that support the directive to model a 5% reduction in expenditures, the intention of the committee, as per our charter, was to review the overall financial position and budget of CALES and provide opportunities for cost savings, new revenues, and operational efficiencies.”

Third- ALVSCE Faculty Council has been asked to provide ideas on how to achieve the 5%, 10% and 15% budget reductions in CALES, along with other shared governance groups in CALES, no later than February 21st. Per Shane, he will be presenting models that have the highest probability of preserving the most jobs in CALES and which position us to bounce back. He gave guidance that we should not be so focused on where to cut, and instead, consider ways to address the budget deficit by working smarter, strategic growing, etc. Please share ideas and input with your FC reps so that they can convey in our council meeting on February 15th, which is scheduled to address this request from Shane. Fourth-During the fall 2023 semester, instructional workloads were a topic of discussion in council-specifically with regard to confusion around standard expectations teaching loads among faculty across the college. Clarification was sought from Associate Dean Mike Staten on the following 3 questions by Faculty Council Chair, Ashlee Linares-Gaffer, on behalf of CALES faculty: What constitutes a full time (0.9 FTE) teaching load? Which core instructional activities should be counted towards an assigned teaching load? What can be done to improve the documentation and communication of formally assigned instructional workload? In response, Dr. Staten shared the clarifying memo (Memo regarding CALES Instructional Workloads) with all CALES Faculty on December 8th, 2024. The hope is that clarification on these questions can strengthen shared understanding between faculty and administrators when determining instructional workload. During the spring semester, ALVSCE FC will continue working on advancing solutions to improve communication, fairness and transparency around instructional workload in partnership with ALVSCE administrators.

Fifth- ALVSCE Faculty Council reps have been asked to provide consensus feedback on a proposed DRAFT policy on Research by POPs, by Dr. Jon Chorover, Associate Dean for Research in CALES (see attached). FC reps will be discussing this policy at our meeting on March 14th. If you have specific feedback, please share with your FC representative directly, no later than March 12th.
