Sonoran Desert Oasis Initiative: Save the Date!

J.P. Jones III, Dean of the UA College of Social and Behavioral Sciences,
and Joaquin Ruiz, Dean of the College of Science, invite you to save the
date of November 15 for a special presentation on a Sonoran Desert Oasis
Initiative. We have just confirmed grant support for a visit from
representatives of UNESCO's International Traditional Knowledge Institute.
Pietro Laureano and his associates wish to propose a branch of their
Institute and a reconstruction of a New World desert oasis, to be
tentatively located in Tucson and affiliated with the University of Arizona,
Pima County, City of Tucson, and other southern Arizona organizations. The
Oasis proposal is endorsed by Francesco Bandarin, Director of UNESCO's World
Heritage Centre and Assistant Director-General for Culture.

The University will host an inaugural event for the Oasis Initiative at 4 pm
on Tuesday, November 15, in the Steward Observatory (Room N210) on campus,
to be followed by a reception. The Oasis Initiative provides a unique
opportunity to integrate the natural and cultural assets of our area to
develop a world-class institute and associated science tourism attraction in
the heart of our city and the Sonoran Desert.

Please share this invitation with appropriate members of your organization.
Further details will follow.

Support provided by the UA Water Sustainability Program, the Institute of
the Environment, and the Renewable Energy Network through the Water,
Environment Energy Solutions Program.
