Dear Faculty,
Some of you have responded with questions and comments, to my email
regarding your furlough balances which need to be taken by 05.22.11 or
06.30.11 depending on your appointment. There are a few rules about taking
furlough time, that I address at the beginning of the year that I would like
to reiterate at this time due to your questions and comments.
. Teaching: you are not allowed to take furlough hours during the
hours that you are scheduled to teach. Therefore, if you have a class that
is taught between 11 a.m. to Noon on M-W-F, you cannot take furlough during
those hours. Even if you have a guest lecturer for a class on a particular
day.
. Travel: While you are on travel status the intention is that you
are traveling for business related purposes. Therefore, if you are injured
while on travel status the UA Workers Compensation Insurance will cover the
cost of the injuries regardless of who is paying for your travels.
Therefore, if you are acknowledging you are traveling for business purposes
you cannot then acknowledge you are on unpaid furlough status for that same
time period. Therefore, a travel day on the airplane to get to your
destination cannot be considered a furlough day because if you are in a
plane crash - your worker's compensation insurance would not cover your
expenses J.
. Weekends: Like you, I work most weekends. But, that is not my
approved schedule time to work nor is it yours. Therefore, you cannot claim
your furlough on the weekends. Only during the normal work week from Monday
to Friday.
. Holidays: You cannot take furlough hours during a regular
approved holiday.
I hope this helps but as always, please let me know if you have any
questions.
Cheers
Donna-Rae
