RE: Educational Sanction for Plagiarism Offenses
The Dean of Students Office, in partnership with our Academic Integrity
Advisory Council, is pleased to launch a workshop that faculty can use as a
sanction when working with students who are found responsible for committing
plagiarism. This workshop will mimic the "diversion" program for the
Student Code of Conduct.
About the workshop
The workshop is a five-session, ten-hour program that covers the following
topics:
* Individual ethics
* Academic ethics
* Review of academic integrity
* Technical aspects of citation
* Research tools available through UA Libraries
This workshop is best for students who are found responsible for committing
plagiarism by mixing their own thoughts with the words of others in a paper.
It is also a good option for students who turn in a paper that is not their
own or was purchased online.
How does this work?
Faculty should complete the Faculty/Student Conference as normal during the
academic integrity hearing process. Traditional sanctions should be
assigned to the student (example: failing grade in the course). If the
faculty member would like to give the student the option of taking the
workshop, the faculty member should also select the educational workshop
option on the sanction section fo the Faculty/Student Conference form.
Faculty should discuss this option with students during the conference
before forwarding paperwork to the Dean of Students Office. Students must
contact the Dean of Students Office to sign up for the workshop.
Students who successfully complete the workshop will have the traditional
sanction erased from their record. Faculty may require that the student
re-submit the plagiarized paper after completing the workshop for a revised
grade. The violation of the Code of Academic Integrity will not be erased
from a student's record. The Dean of Students Office will notify faculty
when the student has completed the workshop. Students can only take the
workshop once, and the workshop is voluntary. Some students may opt to take
the traditional sanction and move on. This workshop cannot be a stand-alone
sanction but must be assigned in conjunction with a traditional sanction.
Students will be charged an $80 monetary sanction for attending the
workshop. The monetary sanction covers the cost of administering the
workshop. This sanction is consistent with sanctions charged for
educational sanctions under the Student Code of Conduct.
