Dean of Students Office, in partnership with our Academic Integrity Advisory
Council, is pleased to launch a workshop that faculty can use as a sanction
when working with students who are found responsible for committing
plagiarism.  This workshop will mimic the “diversion” program
for the Student Code of Conduct.</span></font><o:p></o:p></p>

<p><u><font size=3 face=Arial><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial'>About
the workshop</span></font></u><o:p></o:p></p>

<p><font size=3 face=Arial><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial'>The
workshop is a five-session, ten-hour program that covers the following topics:</span></font><o:p></o:p></p>

<p><font size=3 face=Arial><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial'>This
workshop is best for students who are found responsible for committing
plagiarism by mixing their own thoughts with the words of others in a
paper.  It is also a good option for students who turn in a paper that is
not their own or was purchased online.</span></font><o:p></o:p></p>

<p><u><font size=3 face=Arial><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial'>How
does this work?</span></font></u><o:p></o:p></p>

<p><font size=3 face=Arial><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial'>Faculty
should complete the Faculty/Student Conference as normal during the academic
integrity hearing process.  Traditional sanctions should be assigned to
the student (example:  failing grade in the course).  If the faculty
member would like to give the student the option of taking the workshop, the
faculty member should also select the educational workshop option on the
sanction section fo the Faculty/Student Conference form.  Faculty should
discuss this option with students during the conference before forwarding
paperwork to the Dean of Students Office.  Students must contact the Dean
of Students Office to sign up for the workshop.</span></font><o:p></o:p></p>

<p><font size=3 face=Arial><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial'>Students
who successfully complete the workshop will have the traditional sanction
erased from their record.  Faculty may require that the student re-submit
the plagiarized paper after completing the workshop for a revised grade. The
violation of the Code of Academic Integrity will not be erased from a
student’s record.  The Dean of Students Office will notify faculty
when the student has completed the workshop.   Students can only take
the workshop once, and the workshop is voluntary.  Some students may opt
to take the traditional sanction and move on.  This workshop cannot be a
stand-alone sanction but must be assigned in conjunction with a traditional
sanction.</span></font><o:p></o:p></p>

<p><font size=3 face=Arial><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial'>Students
will be charged an $80 monetary sanction for attending the workshop.  The
monetary sanction covers the cost of administering the workshop.  This
sanction is consistent with sanctions charged for educational sanctions under
the Student Code of Conduct.</span></font><o:p></o:p></p>
