Dear Friends and Supporters of IYRP

Many of you are seeking more support from governments and non-governmental
stakeholders, and are actively engaging in the Regional IYRP Support Groups
(RISG), and we thank you!  We now have 160 letters from non-governmental
organizations. Canada is the latest country to send an official letter of

Additionally, we think it is important to continue to raise awareness about
the IYRP in world events.  One of the most important of these relevant to
rangelands and pastoralism (R&P) is the UN’s Food System Summit in
September 2021.

*What is the Summit about ?*

As part of fast tracking the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development, the UN Secretary General has invited all countries
(“Member States”) to participate in this Summit, and to prepare for it
through multi-stakeholder national conversations called “Member State
Dialogues” in the period of November 2020 to June 2021.

The expected outcomes of the Member State Dialogues include a “pathway for
the transformation of national food systems for the coming decade, in line
with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and all of its 17 Goals
(SDG), and opportunities to bring it to life with practices, policies,
actions and commitments”. This will mean examining, and then building on,
existing food and agriculture policies and plans using a *broad systems
perspective.*

*Why should IYRP engage in the national dialogues?*

The IYRP has a unique opportunity to engage in these dialogues because:

a) the objectives of IYRP are fully aligned with the SDGs
b) the thematic focus of IYRP (see 12-monthly themes) adopts a broad
systems perspective
c) the IYRP coalition already consists of a very widespread and diverse
stakeholdership including pastoralists, local NGOs, national NGOs and
regional/global partners
d) Integrating pastoralism and rangelands issues into the Member State
National Dialogues will help to advance the objectives of IYRP for raising
awareness and action in support of R&P.

*How can you engage in the national dialogues?*

The UN Secretary General has asked Governments to appoint a “National
Dialogue Convenor”.  Three steps are foreseen for the Nov 2020 to June 2021
period, culminating in a Ministerial Pre-Summit in July 2021. These are:

*Stage 1 *initiates the engagement of stakeholder groups at national level,
and organizes scientific task forces in the country to contribute their
findings
*Stage 2* is explicitly designed to include sub-national Dialogues (in
cities, counties, states, prefectorates or other jurisdictions)
*Stage 3 *will then shape the national pathway for sustainable food systems
(in line with the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development) and consolidate
country level commitments and actions.

We encourage you to contact the Convenor of your country, inform them of
your intention to participate in the dialogues, and request information on
how you and your organization can participate.  Below is the link to the
page where Convenors are announced. Some Dialogues may have already
started.  Please keep the RISG Chair/Facilitator of your Region informed of
your progress. Some RISGs may wish to coordinate their participation across
several countries. Briefing notes could be prepared by the RISG to
contribute to the dialogues, and the ISG is available to assist as needed.
