Following up on Ann’s message, just a reminder that the “12 possible themes” document is available on the IYRP webpage under the dropdown topic “Public Relations Materials”. It is available in English, French, Spanish, and Russian. Here is the link: https://globalrangelands.org/international-year-rangelands-and-pastoralists-initiative

Also, a link to the films presented in the “Perspectives on Pastoralism Film Festival” has been added under the dropdown “Film and Video Resources”.

Please let me know if there are other resources to add to the page.

Best wishes,
Barbara

Subject: [IYRPsupportgroup] Fwd: [pastoralist-hub] shepherding schools - should be part of theme for IYRP

Dear all,

There is an interesting discussion (and collection of information) going on right now in the Pastoralist Knowledge Hub about learning to be a pastoralist/shepherd. This is an aspect that should be included in the proposed March theme for the IYRP, in which “vocational training” is mentioned but I don’t think the primary idea was training in the vocation of pastoralism. Such training should be made specific in this proposed theme.

I hope everyone has the “12 possible themes for a proposed IYRP” to which I am referring.

Cheers,
Ann

Dear Mounir,

The reason is that in Europe we are teaching young people from cities , or non -pastoralist brackground mainly , to become shepherds, due to the old age of the few remaining pastoralists. Its a question of how it is culturally perceived, in the cities nowadays and in the rural communities.
In other places the emphasis at schools might be to offer education for the young members of pastoralist families to learn new techniques and perspectives for their profession.
But becareful, there might be wrong assumptions about what is to be " a good professional" in pastoralism, for some still associated with intensification, high technification with high capital investment , introduction of high yield non-local breeds etc. We have seen in Europe that is not the way for pastoralism, it won´t compete with industrial livestock systems, instead we focus on an agroecological perspective for training future pastoralists, based on the local conditions and breeds, small quality productions of added value and recognition of environmental custody role etc.
All the best and thanks for your interest

Many thanks to all colleagues who responded to my query about shepherding schools.
It is clear there is always interest in this “discipline”. However, what is amazing is that there is a shift from what one would expect that such schools would be predominant in the middle east and Africa.
However, many western countries are actually interested in establishing schools across Europe.

Have a nice day.
