<p class="MsoNormal">There is an interesting discussion (and collection of information) going on right now in the Pastoralist Knowledge Hub about learning to be a pastoralist/shepherd. This is an aspect that should be included in the proposed March theme for
the IYRP, in which “vocational training” is mentioned but I don’t think the primary idea was training in the vocation of pastoralism. Such training should be made specific in this proposed theme.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The reason is that in Europe we are teaching young people from cities , or non -pastoralist brackground mainly , to become shepherds, due to the old age of the few remaining pastoralists. Its a question of how it is culturally perceived,
in the cities nowadays and in the rural communities. <o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">In other places the emphasis at schools might be to offer education for the young members of pastoralist families to learn new techniques and perspectives for their profession. <o:p></o:p></p>
</div>

<p class="MsoNormal">But becareful, there might be wrong assumptions about what is to be " a good professional" in pastoralism, for some still associated with intensification, high technification with high capital investment , introduction of high yield non-local
breeds etc. We have seen in Europe that is not the way for pastoralism, it won´t compete with industrial livestock systems, instead we focus on an agroecological perspective for training future pastoralists, based on the local conditions and breeds, small
quality productions of added value and recognition of environmental custody role etc. <o:p></o:p></p>
