INRAE – IYRP Research Group on Pastoralism in France

In line with the aims of the IYRP2026, the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment (INRAE) has formed a working group of about 30 people from different disciplines (animal scientists, geneticists, economists, agronomists, environmental scientists, sociologists, geographers) on pastoralism in France. They are reflecting on the current state of research and key issues that researchers need to address to support the preservation, adaptation and development of pastoralism as an agro-ecological form of livestock husbandry and care for the land – and as a source of livelihood also for future generations.

They are particularly interested in the human–animal–environment relationship and hope to encourage more INRAE colleagues working on rangelands and pastoralism to engage in participatory research with livestock-keepers and other stakeholders. They also welcome exchange with other research groups in France and other countries that are taking a similar transdisciplinary approach.
