Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to encourage your participation in two important university-wide efforts currently underway: the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) and the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). As recently communicated by the Office of the Provost, these surveys are a key priority for the university this semester, and I encourage you to review the message and additional details here: University of Arizona Office of the Provost<https://provost.arizona.edu/news/support-participation-nsse-and-fsse>.
The FSSE provides an opportunity for faculty to share perspectives on teaching practices, student engagement, and the educational experiences we create in our classrooms. At the same time, NSSE gathers critical feedback from our first-year and senior students about their academic experiences, interactions with faculty, and overall engagement.
Together, these surveys offer powerful, complementary insights that inform institutional improvement, support assessment efforts, and guide meaningful conversations about teaching and learning across the university.
What we ask of you:
* Please take 15–20 minutes to complete the FSSE if you are teaching undergraduate students this term.
* Encourage your students—particularly first-year and senior students—to complete the NSSE when they receive the invitation.
Faculty play a key role in student participation. Even a brief mention in class or on D2L can significantly increase response rates and ensure we gather meaningful, representative data. Higher participation ultimately leads to stronger insights that benefit our students, programs, and campus community.
These data directly support our shared commitment to student success, including improving teaching effectiveness, strengthening student engagement, and enhancing career readiness outcomes.
Thank you for your time, your leadership in the classroom, and your continued commitment to our students.
Best regards,
Jim
