Everyone,

I’m sharing some encouraging news on the topic of enrollments. Many of you may have seen yesterday’s ALVSCE Town Hall, during which Dean Burgess remarked that we need to have a “banner recruiting year” to bring in a strong entering class of 2024. But, you may not know that we just completed such a year -truly a “banner” year – with the entering class of 2023. To summarize:

  1. A total of 937 new students (first time students + transfers) joined CALES in August, the largest entering class the college has ever experienced.
  2. This helped to propel total CALES undergraduate enrollment to 3,781 students, up 7.8% from a year earlier.
  3. New student enrollment in CALES (new first time students + transfers) up 5% over 2022
  4. The Fall 2023 entering class is 25% larger than in Fall 2019, the last entering class before the pandemic

How does CALES new student recruiting compare across campus? Below I provide total numbers for the 2023 recruiting cycle for the UA overall, and for CALES along with 3 other colleges. These data include all campuses, first year applicants and enrollees (no transfer students):

For UA overall:

Apps: 55,856 (up 8.1% from prior year)

Admits: 48,265 (86.4% of apps)

Enrolled: 9,291 (19.2% of admits)

For CALES:

Apps: 2,989 (up 12.3% from prior year)

Admits: 2,578 (86.2% of apps)

Enrolled: 661 (25.6% of admits)

For Eller College of Management:

Apps: 12,967 (up 15.7% from prior year)

Admits: 11,348 (87.5% of apps)

Enrolled: 2,057 (18.1% of admits)

For College of Social and Behavioral Sciences:

Apps: 6,662 (up 4.9% from prior year)

Admits: 5,582 (83.7% of apps)

Enrolled: 831 (16.7% of admits)

For College of Science:

Apps: 13,578 (up 8.2% from prior year)

Admits: 11,886 (82.5% of apps)

Enrolled: 1,963 (16.5% of admits)

For a host of reasons, CALES has growth in applicants well above average, and appears to bring them to the first day of class at a significantly higher rate than the comparison colleges and the overall university. Of course, we think a large part of the reason is the superb job done by our recruiting and marketing teams, working in partnership with our academic units' faculty and staff. Everyone played a part in this! Truly an outstanding effort.

I’ve included the two “headline” charts below. I’ve also attached two files with much more degree-level detail for those of you who would like to take a deeper dive into how your favorite programs are doing. All of this pertains to the messaging from yesterday’s Town Hall. Instructional growth is far and away the largest source of growth in the CALES budget. The good news is that both potential and existing students are responding well to our messaging as we help them imagine and pursue career path opportunities. I think we have good reason to be optimistic that our programs will continue to resonate with prospective students as we look forward to welcoming the class of 2024.

Many thanks for all that you do to help turn dreams into reality for our students.

Mike
