Everyone,

Less than one week to go! Already the parking lots are filling with move-in traffic. I thought we had another day before the crunch, but apparently not.

I'm very pleased to pass along to you an extremely helpful note from AREC Associate Professor of Practice Na Zuo. She sent this today to AREC faculty and has given me permission to share it with all of you. You may be especially interested in the suggested syllabus language regarding Generative AI. We've been waiting all summer for UCATT to weigh in with official policy. The link below isn't quite an official statement, but it came from a UArizona working group, including Gretchen Gibbs at UCATT. I think this is as close as we are going to get for the start of this semester. It gives you plenty of room to tailor a statement to your preferences (if you want to include a statement at all). But, I found it very helpful.

Best wishes for the start of classes!

Mike

Subject: Fall course syllabi info and others

Dear teaching colleagues,

Happy fall prep!

Three items below that I think might be helpful to share as we are updating our syllabi and courses:

  * Syllabus language regarding the new Pay One Price from Cheryle Gerken:

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Pay One Price

The program from the UA BookStores provides required textbooks and courseware for a flat rate each semester. If you’re a Main Campus undergraduate, you’re automatically enrolled in Pay One Price each semester (fall & spring). You can opt out for Fall 2023 until Sept. 3, 2023, via D2L to receive a refund. Detailed information about Pay One Price can be found at https://shop.arizona.edu/payoneprice_student. If you have more questions, email payoneprice at arizona.edu<mailto:payoneprice at arizona.edu> or call 520-621-8868.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Additional message from Cheryle: “This is copy that the BookStores created. Students need to know that if they have to source materials on their own after they opt out, they will pay more than the prices listed on the BookStores website and may need a credit card, depending on the materials. I wouldn’t put that in the syllabus, but just as an FYI for instructors to know. If they do opt out now or before Sept 3rd, they can easily opt back in. please share with colleagues as well! ”

  * Syllabus language regarding Generative AI: when I reach out to UCATT colleagues and am told “Gretchen Gibbs and a fantastic team across campus compiled this resource<https://ucatt.arizona.edu/sites/default/files/2023-08/Syllabus-Guidance-2.1.1.pdf> about AI and Syllabi Policies. I would recommend starting here.” I personally found the 6-page resource shared helpful and appreciate the different route that the resource outlined, e.g. not allowed, permitted, and the middle ground. I don’t think the University had any policy regarding generative AI sent out yet but you might find the resource helpful if you feel the need to write in some policy in your syllabi – I have to deal with students using ChatGPT in assignment writing this summer.

  * If you’d like to set up the classroom auto-recording for your in-person classes, as plan B for students who might not be able to attend class due to sickness or quarantine this fall, below is the information and online form to fill out from UCATT.

“Please fill out our Panopto Remote Recorder Request form<https://uarizona.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_dmWwGQzhjVUjUSq>. If you need multiple courses/classrooms to be scheduled you will need to fill out the form for each course/classroom. Once the form is filled out, Jeffrey Jones from UITS Academic Technologies will verify that the software is installed and updated on that classroom machine. Once he knows the software is installed on the classroom machine he'll be able to go in and schedule the recordings to auto record on your behalf and we'll send you confirmation that he has successfully scheduled them. Let us know if you have questions or you can reach out to Jeffrey Jones at acadtech at arizona.edu<mailto:acadtech at arizona.edu>. “

  * Safety on Campus and in the Classroom

Hope those are helpful! Good luck with this week and next ;)
