The National Science Foundation Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) program solicitation announcement is anticipated for April 2016<http://arizona.us8.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=b6ba9388f9c749678c5f1628d&id=a6af76428c&e=9deae42247>. MRSECs engage in interdisciplinary materials research and education of the highest quality while addressing fundamental problems in science and engineering by promoting active collaborations between universities and other sectors, including industry and international institutions. Based on the previous solicitation (13-556<http://arizona.us8.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=b6ba9388f9c749678c5f1628d&id=56b49dd100&e=9deae42247>), we anticipate that the NSF will announce a preliminary proposal deadline for August–September 2016 and, if NSF is consistent with past programs, the UA will be allowed to submit one (1) proposal as the lead organization.

Interested investigators are asked to submit a UA pre-proposal to their deans for referral to the Office for Research & Discovery by the internal deadline. Pre-proposals should include a 3–4 page description of the envisaged MRSEC that describes: (1) a rationale and vision; (2) the participating institutions; (3) the interdisciplinary research groups; (4) an outline of the education, human resource development, and diversity strategic plan; and (5) any expected collaborations with industry, national laboratories, and/or other sectors. A biographical sketch for the PI and each Co-PI (up to 4 pages each) should also be submitted as part of the UA pre-proposal package.

  *   College/Institute review internal deadline:  On or about February 29, 2016. Please consult with your Dean’s/Director’s office for specific date.
  *   Office for Research & Discovery internal review deadline:  March 7, 2016.
