Everyone,

The CES director has authority over, and is responsible and accountable for, the CES strategy for delivering on its four major missions, state and federal CES funding and budget, and overall CES outputs and outcomes. These overall CES outputs and outcomes become relevant to academic units heads when the CES Director invests CES Specialist faculty FTE  whose continuing status is by definition held in their academic units. CALS Academic unit heads who have Extension FTE in their units are responsible and accountable for their units' discipline-specific CES outputs and outcomes being consistent with the CES strategy.

Like all faculty, CES Specialists have the privilege of academic freedom, including how they deliver their programs so that their units' discipline-specific CES outputs and outcomes are achieved.

CES Director Jeff Silvertooth has informed me that "There is a general lack of appropriate integration and coordination of programs and operations among Extension Specialists, academic units, County Agents and other personnel based in statewide Extension units."  I am extremely concerned by this information. I am also, and separately, concerned by some clear disconnects between the various Extension Specialist performance reviews from academic unit committees and academic unit heads, and those from the CES director and director's team.

I look forward to our candid and productive conversation on Thursday to ensure we all have clarity on these issues and what the steps will be to resolve them.
