Message from the AZ4-H Program Leader

April is a beautiful time of year, it is the beginning of Spring Fairs (already La Paz, Pinal, and Yuma counties have had the chance for 4-H youth to demonstrate and receive feedback on their project work); it is a time of lambing, calving, and wildflower blooms; and it is both National Volunteer Appreciation Month and Diversity Month. Also, this year the global pandemic has some cautiously optimistic indicators, allowing our Arizona Cooperative Extension Covid-19 Mitigation Phase Plan to advance to higher-phases than we have seen since the onset, which at these higher-levels allows for the in person programming we all cherish.

For National Volunteer Appreciation Month I want to say thank you to each of you for your contributions to ensuring Arizona 4-H youth had continuity of 4-H meetings, social interaction, and the fun that they have come to appreciate about 4-H. These are all factors necessary to support strong mental health. Based on our end-of-year survey, over half of you continued to hold virtual programs, and if you held virtual programs you had a lot of them! If you haven’t had virtual programs either because your content was challenging to translate to a virtual setting or broadband issues, I hope you are excited to be able to return to in-person meetings. I sure am! And yes, despite the Governor’s executive order, those meetings do still need to support COVID-19 mitigation measures (Arizona Guide for 4-H Club and Project Meetings: COVID-19 Mitigation Guide (https://t.e2ma.net/click/srfd3c/s3cj3mp/0533tj)).

The 4-H movement across the country, and here in Arizona is committed to making #opportunity4all.  Arizona 4-H has a long history of creating #opportunity4all by ensuring economic and educational preparedness for 4-H members, by investing in 4-H programming in tribal communities and supporting culturally responsive programming (e.g. an Irish Clogging Club or a Flamenco Dance Club).  I ask you to continue to create #opportunity4all by creating a safe and welcoming environments for every youth and family who expresses interest in your club and project, no matter their demographic characteristics, socio-economic, or disability status.  Together, during this month and beyond we can ensure #opportunity4all blooms here in Arizona.

Thank you and stay safe and healthy,

Jeremy Elliott-Engel

Turning 4-H Project Experience into Mastery:

Do.  Reflect.  Apply.

Since the beginning of 4-H, caring adults have used the idea of the Experiential Learning model. The Experiential Learning model is made up of five steps which can easily be simplified to Do. Reflect. Apply. The goal of Experiential Learning is to support 4-H youth as they achieve Mastery in their project content and in life skills.

Encouragement Works:  Lessons from the Year-End Program Evaluation

When adults encourage youth to participate in 4-H events, they do!  Results from the Arizona 4-H Youth Development annual review indicate that youth engagement in the online/virtual events was dependent on adult encouragement.

A slight majority of adult volunteers said "Bear Down" and either created opportunities or promoted opportunities created by others for online/virtual engagement for youth.  These various events were set up to cope with reduced meeting options due to COVID-19 restrictions.

We'll have more results from the annual evaluation of program in coming issues.  Thank you to everyone who participated in the review process.  Thank you to the state and county staff who helped construct the content and deploy the online survey.  Thank you to the volunteers and youth who completed the survey.  Your reflections on the year help us generalize the lessons of the year so that we can apply them to our plans for next year!

Posting Event Info in ZIngBooks

Need to communicate with your club members on meeting dates and upcoming events? Now you can utilize the “Events” feature in ZingBooks!

You can navigate to this feature by looking on the left-hand side of your dashboard. If you scroll down, you will see the tab called “Events”. You, as a club leader, can add an event by going to your “events” tab in your navigation menu and clicking “Add Event”. Here you can add various details like date and time, and once it is finalized, your club members will see this event in their calendar.

If you’re interested in adding an event open to many clubs across the counties, work with your county admin. May Reporting Design best-practices suggest a large font size for easy readability both on desktop and mobile devices.

Room for 10 more 4-H Ag Innovators

Arizona 4-H is one of seven states selected to implement the 2021 4-H Ag Innovators Experience (AIE). The Arizona program still has room for ten more participants.  We are looking for passionate agricultural advocates. This train-the-trainer program is an excellent leadership development program for youth.

Participants should have an interest in learning about the importance of a healthy sustainable food supply to feed a growing world, be ready to share what they have learned with other youth, and be willing to lead community service and civic engagement efforts. Go to the 4-H Ag Innovators Experience 2021 (https://t.e2ma.net/click/srfd3c/s3cj3mp/wyj4tj) event page to register and for more information. Contact Dr. Ag Innovators Experience (mailto:lopezg3 at email.arizona.edu?subject=Ag%20Innovators%20Experience), 4-H STEM Specialist with questions.
