Greetings Team:
Good news for change of majors within the college for new main campus students. They can now be changed internally.
For students wanting to change into CALES from another college, we'll continue to follow the same protocol below:
1.
Connect with student to confirm they want your major
2.
A.Send request to CALES-recruitment at arizona.edu (Erin and Lauren monitor this email) copying student on email, and Erin or Lauren will send request to Danielle Crosby (dshafer at arizona.edu<mailto:dshafer at arizona.edu>) in Admissions to proceed with next steps. OR
B.Send email to Daniel Crosby (dshafer at arizona.edu<mailto:dshafer at arizona.edu>) and copy CALES-recruitment at arizona.edu and student on the email.
3.
Next steps will be an email from Danielle to student.
Colleges have asked for access to reports on these changes to know where they are in the process. This is part of the section below "In parallel...." Once we know more we'll share this information out.
Reach out if you have any questions or concerns. You can send email or post in Teams business chat.
Best,
Nancy

Subject: [enrollment-transitions] Update: Change of Major Implementation
Dear colleagues,
Following our recent EST meeting, we held a listening session with AAC advising leaders to create a structured opportunity to gather feedback on the implementation of the Change of Major approach for new main campus students. The session was focused on understanding implementation challenges, communication gaps, and any unintended impacts on students and advising workflows.
I want to extend a sincere thank you to those who participated in the listening session. I appreciated your candor, the examples you shared, and your willingness to engage in thoughtful dialogue. This collaboration is essential as we work toward our shared goal of student success.
From that conversation, several consistent themes emerged, including:
* Friction for students moving between closely related majors within the same college, including administrative challenges tied to program transitions, renaming, or restructuring
* The desire for clearer transparency into Change of Major request status
* Challenges with handoffs and role clarity across Admissions, Orientation, and Advising.
* Timeline pressures from admission through the start of classes that impact both student experience and advising operations
Based directly on this feedback, change of major requests within the same college for new main campus students admitted to that college will now be processed within the college, without additional review by Admissions.
In parallel, we are actively working on:
* Increasing transparency into the status of Change of Major requests, and
* Clarifying and documenting handoffs and communication expectations across units
We recognize how important these areas are to both the student experience and advising workflows and will share additional details as this work progresses.
As a reminder:
* This process applies to main campus admits only
* The primary point of contact for students and advisors is Danielle Crosby in Admissions (dshafer at arizona.edu<mailto:dshafer at arizona.edu>) —there is no need to refer students to a specific recruiter, unless known; please connect directly with Admissions
If you have additional feedback or examples related to Change of Major implementation, please send those to me and Kelly Ratliff, Chief of Staff, Enrollment Management (kratliff1 at arizona.edu<mailto:kratliff1 at arizona.edu>).
Thank you again for your continued partnership and for the thoughtful engagement across EST and AAC as we refine implementation in support of student success.
Thanks,
Alex

Subject: Change of major - new main campus students
Hi UPAC,
Thank you for having me at last week’s UPAC meeting; attached are the slides that were shared regarding major changes for new main campus students. In response to the questions raised during and after the meeting, I wanted to provide additional information.
Incoming main campus students may explore and request changes to their major. As outlined in communications from the Provost’s Office<https://view.comms.arizona.edu/?vawpToken=URZYHDY22UUULPKSTR7ZNJLAWM.110056&utm_source=trellis&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Key%20guidelines%20to%20support%20informed%20major%20changes%20and%20ensure%20academic%20readiness.>, requests should be approached thoughtfully to ensure alignment with a student’s preparation, the review process used in their original admission, and, where applicable, specific program requirements.
This approach is intentionally aligned with our Success for Every Student strategic imperative and our Academic Success Goals, including supporting students in starting programs where they can be successful, limiting unnecessary academic detours, and promoting steady progress toward degree completion. This direction and the rationale for the university’s holistic admissions strategy are also highlighted in a recent article by Provost Prelock.<https://tucson.com/opinion/column/article_06933c6a-dd20-4c22-a97d-a10e8e26c1ae.html>
Our messaging to incoming students remains consistent: students may explore a change of major, and we will connect them with the appropriate next step. The information below provides additional details that may help address specific questions we have received. When in doubt, students can be referred to Danielle Crosby (dshafer at arizona.edu<mailto:dshafer at arizona.edu>) for next steps.
Spring/Summer 2026 Major Change Process (New Fall 2026 Students)
In partnership with Admissions, major change requests for new beginner/incoming main campus students, including both first-year and transfer students are reviewed consistently, documented appropriately, and aligned with admission review and academic program requirements. Decisions are communicated directly to students via email.
How the Process Works & Timeline Considerations
* Before Matriculation (Admitted, Not Yet Committed)
* Students may work directly with their Admissions recruiter to discuss a potential major change. When appropriate, the recruiter opens the major change request form and provides guidance on next steps. Requests are reviewed weekly, and decisions are communicated to students via email.
* After Matriculation, Prior to Orientation Advising/Registration
* Once a student has committed, requests continue to be processed through Admissions to ensure consistency with the student’s original admission review. Staff may either refer students to Danielle Crosby or continue support through the Admissions recruiter. When appropriate, the request form is opened and reviewed, within one week. Approved changes are coordinated with relevant teams to support Orientation planning.
* After Orientation Advising/Registration
* Requests are still reviewed through Admissions, with Danielle Crosby serving as the primary point of contact, to ensure consistent documentation and decision‑making. Approved students are then connected with their new academic unit for continued onboarding and any necessary schedule adjustments.
* Double Majors and Minors:
* New students interested in declaring a minor may do so during the summer in consultation with their academic advisor.
* Requests to add a second major or degree, however, require a more in‑depth advising conversation than is typically feasible during Orientation advising and registration appointments. For this reason, students are encouraged to discuss second majors or degrees in the fall, after they have begun classes at the University of Arizona and in consultation with their advisor.
Please note: Major changes requested within 10 days of a scheduled Orientation advising or course registration appointment are discouraged due to limited capacity to support advising and registration adjustments.
I hope the above provides some additional clarity, and again, thank you for your partnership in supporting students as they begin their Wildcat experience.
Thanks,
Alex
