Hi all,
I think we’ve all gotten some conflicting information about the civics requirement launch, but it will start in fall 2026 for sure! A few more details below.

Best,
Katie

Hi Katie,

So great to hear from you! Yes, I know it's been a bit back and forth. We did a workshop with Advisors on Feb 19th, the slide deck is the best to share with the team. The recording will be up on the ARC soon, I believe.

The Civic Institutions requirement begins in the 2026-2027 academic catalog. We have two courses that are approved for fall 2026 - POL 201 and HIST 150C3. I am working with the departments and Sharon to coordinate a seat release strategy ahead of NSO and transfer orientation so we have seats saved primarily for transfer students. There are many other courses that are moving through the approvals processes that will be tagged with the new CI requirement for spring 2027 and onward. Credit by Exam tables will updated after commencement. I'm also working with Sharon on developing guidance for advisors for transfer articulation.

RNR 150 will carry the Civic Exploration Attribute - this will not satisfy the new Civic Institutions requirement. I've messaged Jim Hunt about working with the CALES faculty to submit course proposals for the new CI requirement so there are plenty of offerings for students from the Colleges. I'm happy to join a GE Curriculum Committee meeting if that would be helpful to talk more with the faculty about potential course proposals for the CI requirement.

Hope that helps clarify! Let me know if it would be helpful to chat more.

-Devon

Hi Devon,

I think Scott prepped you for this email a while ago… 😊

I don’t understand how the civics requirement is rolling out and advisors are getting mixed messages about it. We were told fall at the big advisors meeting, but received an email that it would start in the spring of 2027. We are trying to get our advising materials ready for next year and are seeing that the civics requirement is showing up for the fall 26 catalog for our incoming transfer students. Can you help with clarifying what is happening? And also for example, what is going on with the normal civics ge attribute vs the Civics requirement – is RNR 150 going to be used but on a temp basis until more civics courses get onboarded?

Thanks!! Happy to chat over tea too!

Best,

Katie
