Greetings Agvisors:

Hope this email finds you all well. This Monday at UAAC Tom Murray from the Office of General Education address questions brought up by the advising community regarding the new General Education (GE) Refresh. Below are notes from the meeting in addition to follow up information provided afterwards.

If you have not yet visited the GE Refresh page for advisors (https://ge.arizona.edu/resources/advisors) or read through the information shared by Monica Vega on 9/30/21 on UPAC list (copied and pasted below for reference) please make sure you do to continue learning the new GE structure that will go into effect this Spring 2022.

10/11/21 UAAC notes regarding Gen Ed Refresh
Tom Murray

  * GE representatives will be available during the Spring 2022 orientation sessions to answer advisors' questions when working with students.
  * First-year students will be pre-scheduled for UNI 101 and will not be able to drop/swap this class themselves. Super users in the college will be able to make this swap.
  * Expressed concern over the difficulty of students having an additional class that they cannot change on their own.
  * Discussed how the UNI 101 class could conflict with majors that require students to take major classes starting the first semester. Transfer students should not have this issue.

  * UNI 101 will have several sessions offered during a variety of days and times to mitigate this scheduling conflict.
  * UNI 101 & 301 should not show on transfer students' ADVIPs.

  * The ABOR policy stating that students need to take at least 32 units of GEs to satisfy the requirement, with no exceptions, is being verified.
  * It is recommended that students take UNI 301 when they've completed foundations writing and math, as well as completed or in progress 5 out of 7 GE classes.
  * Class search is being built with a warning message so that when a student is searching for a GE based on the wrong set of requirements, students will be notified in order to prevent enrollment in the wrong program.
  * Advisors currently do not have substitution authority although this permission is being strongly recommended during the ramp up of the implementation and not as many courses available.
  * Over 300 courses should be available for the Fall 2022 cohort. Course cap for UNI 101 will be around 25 students. UNI 301 is designed to be 7 weeks online for all students.
  * Attributes will not be implemented until Fall 2024.
  * Tom will be asking a representative on the tech side of the refresh to attend the next meeting. He will also be following up with Roxie regarding how the ADVIP will be re-structured.

Subject: [uaac] Follow-up

Hi Roxie,

I wanted to follow up on some of the questions that came up today:

  * TR ADVIPs will not show UNIV 101/301 requirements, correct?

     * This is correct; however, you may see some transfer students with these requirements on the ADVIP right now. The new ADVIP was configured to remove the requirements for students in a designated student group, but that student group has not yet been created. I am working on getting an ETA for the creation of that student group. I did confirm that once students are added to the student group, it will retroactively remove the requirements from the ADVIP for transfer students.

  * If a program has a designated course that double-dips as a GE requirement (e.g. Eller/ECON 200), how will that display on the ADVIP? Will Eller students not see EP: SS at all, or will they all see it?

     * All Gen Ed requirements will show up on the ADVIP for all students (except in the case of UNIV 101/301 for transfer students). If it is a degree requirement for the major, it will show up in both places.

  * 32-unit requirement. Do students who test out of certain foundations requirements need to make up those units? For example, a student needs second semester second language proficiency, places above that (but does not get credit), takes ENGL 109H - they'd only technically have 29 units of earned GE credit.

     * Pending. We are working with Greg Heileman to get clarification on this; 32 units is a requirement per ABOR policy (30 per HLC accreditation guidelines), so we need to check on policy interpretation and implementation.

  * Will the 32-unit requirement for GE credit be added to the ADVIP?

     * Also pending based on clarification of previous question.

  * Can someone who works directly with ADVIP go to the next AAC meeting on 10/25 at 10am?

     * Yes, Lindsay Wedge is coordinating and will connect with Roxie.

Let me know if you have any questions!
