Subject: [oac] Domestic, first-year admission and scholarship update, Academic Year 2021-22
Importance: High

Good morning, all-

I am writing to update you on an important change to the admission and merit aid awarding process for domestic, first-year students for Academic Year 2021-22.

As the pandemic continues to impact lives, we have been planning for ways to support students through the admissions and enrollment process - particularly rural, low income and BIPOC students. Requiring standardized test scores to earn admission and/or scholarships is one area we can control in support of students who cannot test due to a variety of circumstances ranging from: cancelled tests, limited school day testing, fewer test sites creating extensive travel, limited number of spots available per testing day and more.

The University of Arizona, and the specific academic colleges that use test scores for admission,* will suspend the use of those test scores (ACT/SAT) for admission consideration and for merit scholarships for the entering class of summer/fall 2021. Merit scholarships for domestic, first-year students will be based on Core GPA**. The updated scholarship grid<https://financialaid.arizona.edu/types-of-aid/scholarships/incoming-transfer> is now posted on the OSFA website. Other awards, like Dean's Exemplary and National Scholar Awards, etc. will remain unchanged. We join over 1,300 four-year colleges and universities in this effort.

As you may know, the University of Arizona has always been "test-optional" for general admission as test scores are not part of ABOR Admission policy. We will continue to be considered "test-optional" (rather than "test-blind") for admission purposes as this will allow us to use test scores when helpful to a student (i.e. clearing a course deficiency), but a test score will not be required for admission or institutional merit aid.

I am also happy to share that the Honors College will be "test-blind," i.e. they will not use test scores in their admission process for Academic Year 2021-22.

At this time, the decision to suspend the use of test scores is for the 2021-2022 academic year only. EM and UAIR will conduct a study on student success and the use of the Core GPA - as well as other factors - over the next year. The results of this analysis will determine how we will move forward for Academic Year 2022-23 and beyond.

Thank you to Damien Snook, Enrollment Analytics, for preparing the initial analysis and proposal. It was spot on! And, thank you to UAIR, particularly Ravneet Chadha and Jenn Schilling, for the additional modeling. Thank you to the academic colleges who have agreed to alter their processes to ensure access and equity for our incoming students. Finally, thank you to President Robbins, Provost Folks and the Executive Leadership Team for their support and approval.

Email messages announcing this change were sent to 2021-22 applicants and prospects, as well as high school counselors, on Friday, 8/7/20 and a similar message has also been sent to deans.

*Engineering, CAPLA, Eller (Direct) and Nursing.

**Core GPA is comprised of ABOR's 16 academic coursework competency requirements<https://public.azregents.edu/Policy%20Manual/2-121-Undergraduate%20Admission.pdf> (pgs 5 & 6)

Thank you!
Dani
