Summer Session I
Latina/o Pop: Race, Gender, Sexuality & Popular Culture ENGL 312 (22443) This course is cross-listed with GWS 312 and MAS 312 M-F 9:00-10:45AM EDUC 318
Instructor: Ana Milena Ribero

While stories about the US/Mexico border abound in film, television, and literature, such stories seldom portray the complexities of migration and the diversity of the people who cross the border. Through a variety of texts in film, literature, and television, students will explore how Latin at s are presented within dominant narratives of migration in US popular culture and discuss the sociopolitical implications of those portrayals. With a focus on critical analysis, this course aims to challenge conventional stories about Latin at s as effected in discourses of the US/Mexico border and to approach migration as a complex global phenomenon with multivariate causes and effects.
