> Hello Fellow Advisors,
>
> With orientation starting tomorrow, I thought I would send out an email about intro bio. If you have non-freshmen that need to get into a lab please refer them to this link: http://blc.arizona.edu/courses/181Lab/Pieces/181info.html and let them know to keep checking UAccess. As an FYI the honors section of intro bio lab MCB 181M is a rigorous and challenging course. Please let your students know that it is designed to be a challenging course. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

> Quick answers to basic questions about 181R/181L181M (Honors 181H info at bottom)
>
> What is the relationship between the lecture course (MCB181R) and the lab course (MCB181L)?
> While most departments require both, they are separate courses. You will receive an independent grade for each. They are mutually reinforcing, and are best taken simultaneously. In the Spring of 1014, both will be available (in the past, only 181R has been available in the Spring).
>
> What is MCB184?
> This is a single course that basically combines 181L and 181R. It is offered only in the Spring. Taking MCB184 fulfills the requirements of taking (181L + 181R). It cannot be used to GRO 181L or 181R.

> What is the relationship between the lab course (181L) and the advanced lab (181M)?
> While most departments require both, they are separate courses. You will receive an independent grade for each. They are mutually reinforcing, and are best taken simultaneously.
>
> I'm trying to (change/get into) a lab section, but they're all full!
> In order to accommodate the many Freshman Orientation sessions, additional lab slots open at several points during the summer. Keep your eye on UAccess for openings.
>
> Can I change from lab section X to lab section Y?
> If section Y is available by UAccess, you can do it yourself. If not, you'll need a very compelling reason; there is little to no flexibility given the large number of students these courses serve. After the first meeting of a lab section, changing sections is blocked because each section is taught with a different style and assignments; you'd be behind intellectually and possibly in terms of graded assignments as well.
>
> What are the dates/policies/rules/textbooks/assignments for my section of 181R or 181L
> The homepage for all the labs is http://blc.arizona.edu/courses/181Lab/; a calendar and syllabus are linked from it (check and see if they indicate they are updated for F13!). Lecture sections are available through D2L after registration. Be aware that different 181R sections use different textbooks, so check and purchase carefully!
>
> When do labs begin?
> The week of Aug. 26. Purchase a lab manual and bring it with you. You'll be doing experiments and getting homework day one.
>
> I'm still in dire need of the kind of assistance that only a trained professional can provide!
> The Intro Bio Admin Office can be reached at 621-9267
> BioSciences East 109 (For the summer hours of the Intro Bio Admin office, check here )
>
> Is there an Honors lecture section? When will it be taught?
> Students will be added to any one of several Honors timeslots (TBA) while continuing in their scheduled lecture section; the combined course will be for 4 hours Honors credit. Honors work will be weighted into the final grade for lecture. Students will hear and interact with faculty about faculty research, advance problem-solving skills and increase understanding of Intro Bio topics. The course culminates in working with a faculty mentor to understand a key scientific paper and explain it to peers.
