CALS Monday Message

WE THINK OUTSIDE THE BARN Volume 9, Issue 1: August 26, 2013

WELCOME NEW STUDENTS AND RETURNING STUDENTS

Another year has begun at the University of Arizona! The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences would like to say welcome to the new students who are with us for the first time, and welcome back to the continuing students. All of us in the Office of Career and Academic Services are ready and excited to go this fall semester. Remember you can find us in Forbes 211 and 201. We will have open walk-in hours for the first week, so appointments are not necessary. Hopefully we can give you quick answers to any questions that may come up, but here are just a few reminders:

· GRO form must be filled out on-line by Sept. 20th
· Sept. 3rd is the last day to use UAccess for adds, changing classes or sections or changing to or from pass/fail or grade
· Sept 4th begins the $25 course late drop fee for undergraduate students
Sept. 6th is the last day to drop with a 100% refund
Remember the Think Tank at the Bear Down Gym has some great study aids and tutoring help available. They also have satellite locations at the Park Student Union and the Rec Center.
Lastly, remember your major advisor is a great resource and is here to help you! If you have any problems or issues, please take advantage of their expertise and ask for help.
We hope that you have a healthy and academically strong semester. Ask questions as they arise, be proactive. Good luck and Bear Down!

Become a CALS AmbassadorThe College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Ambassador program is the premier leadership program within CALS and is geared towards promoting the University of Arizona, and within those parameters promoting the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The CALS Ambassador program is composed of elite students representing the diverse majors offered within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
It is the goal of the CALS Ambassador program to develop student leaders by encouraging members to be an active part of the community through outreach and education. CALS Ambassadors serve as peer mentors to CALS students as well as the “face” of CALS to stakeholders and prospective students across the state, nation and the world.

The CALS Ambassador “Cookies and Maps” is an annual event which takes place on the first two days of the fall semester. Ambassadors mingle with students who are on their way to or from class and give away cookies and water as well as having maps to help new (and not so new) students find their classes. Attendance to the “Cookies and Maps” event will be a mandatory for those wishing to apply to the CALS Ambassador program. There is a minimum commitment of one (1) hour at the Cookies and Maps table. My preference would be to have those interested complete their time in no more than two (2) 30 minute shifts, however, in order to accommodate various schedules, the one (1) hour commitment can consist of a minimum of 15 minute intervals and can be spread out over the course of Monday and Tuesday.
Only those completing this requirement will be eligible to attend the information session on Thursday August 29th and receive the CALS Ambassador application.
“Cookies and Maps” will take place in front of the Forbes Building from7am to 10am on Monday August 26th and Tuesday August 27th. Please call 621-3616 with any questions or concerns.

Eligibility requirements to apply:

Upper classmen applying must have a minimum of three semesters remaining in their program including the current semester (earliest graduation date should be no sooner than December 2014).

Student Tips for a Successful Semester

Tips to follow which will prepare you to have a successful semester. Please read these carefully as they are very important!

Email
-So important! Check your UA email at least twice per day, especially around the time when school starts.
-Set up folders for email so you don’t get overwhelmed with a full inbox.
-Only use your UA email address for communicating with professionals on campus (Professors, Advisors, etc.)
- You may find it convenient to have other email accounts set up to forward to your UA email.

Academic support
-If you’re overwhelmed by a class and you think you’re in over your head, set up an appointment to visit your <http://advising.arizona.edu/co_major.php> advisor ASAP!
- Information on the courses required for your major can be found on your Academic Requirements report (on your UAccess Student Center)
- Questions relating to General Education, Financial Aid, University Policy and Resources should be directed to the CALS <http://cals.arizona.edu/cas/> College Advisors * Forbes Room 211 * <tel:520-621-3616> 520-621-3616.
-Explore the <http://thinktank.arizona.edu/> Think Tank and write down workshop and weekly course review dates and times.
-Figure out where the nearest computer lab/printer is to your classes.

Classes
-Double check your schedule if you printed it earlier this summer (rooms may have changed)
-Double check rooms and times the day before school starts
-Take a “practice run” to all the buildings your classes are in
-As you enter any class, read the door and front board for course/room change announcements
-Read every syllabus front-to-back; it is your contract for the course!
-Get a planner and write in every assignment and exam due date as soon as you get your syllabi; also write down <http://www.registrar.arizona.edu/schedules/dates.htm> dates and deadlines
-Use Think Tank’s <http://thinktank.arizona.edu/sites/thinktank.arizona.edu/files/files/pdfs/Workshops%20fall%202013.pdf> semester on a page and put your exams and big assignments on it for a quick glance of your requirements for the semester! This will help you notice exams and papers that are due on the same day.
-If you want to try getting into a closed class:
*Contact the department to determine if there’s a waitlist or specific procedure for trying to get into the class.
*Keep checking UAccess! Students will be changing their schedules a lot during the week before school starts and the first week of school
*Take a <http://registrar.arizona.edu/sites/default/files/Change%20of%20Schedule%20Nov%202011.pdf> Change of Schedule form to the first day of the class; if the instructor signs it, take it to the Registrar’s Office within 5 days.

Books
-Save your receipts in case you change classes and don’t open it if it’s plastic-wrapped
-Wait until after the first day of class and the syllabus is reviewed to open plastic-wrapped books
-You can find your booklist through a link in the right column on your UAccess or through the <http://uabookstores.arizona.edu/textbooks/> UA bookstore website
-If you buy your books online make sure you get the correct edition! Ask the instructor if older editions are acceptable

Finances
-Use <http://career.arizona.edu/joblink> Wildcat JobLink (especially to find work study jobs) – pay the $5 fee to utilize Career Services, there are tons of amazing resources on it!
-Tuition payments are due by first day of class to avoid late fee.

Other
- <http://parking.arizona.edu/alternative/indexBike.php> Register your bike with Parking & Transportation and use U-locks only; don’t use cable locks on a bike, they are easily cut.
-Watch the weather forecast; it will still be raining for the next month! Bring an umbrella!
-Bookmark the online phonebook: <http://www.arizona.edu/phonebook> www.arizona.edu/phonebook - you can find your professors, TAs, advisors, friends, and any other contacts you might need.
Library
-Use the library's assignment scheduler to help you start planning your assignments. It breaks down assignments and provides relevant links for further resources. <http://www.library.arizona.edu/help/tutorials/scheduler/> http://www.library.arizona.edu/help/tutorials/scheduler/

Above all, don’t wait to get help – contact an advisor! Advisors are here to help you resolve challenges and be successful!

Best wishes for a great semester!
