RE: Changes to English Proficiency Requirements for Undergraduate
International Student Admission
After much collaboration and research by the Office of Undergraduate
Admissions, International Student Services, the Center for English as a
Second Language, and approval from the Provost's Office, the University of
Arizona has implemented a change in the English proficiency requirement for
undergraduate international admission.
Effective Fall 2013, our iBT overall TOEFL score requirement will be 70
(previously 61) and the IELTS overall band score requirement will be 6
(previously 6.5). This change will align our overall TOEFL and IELTS scores.
All other methods to prove English proficiency for undergraduate admission
are unchanged and are listed on the International Admissions website at:
admissions.arizona.edu/international. Spring 2013 admission will be based
on the previous requirements.
This important change will help us continue to build our pipeline for
outstanding international students. International students who are
academically admissible, but do not yet meet our English proficiency
requirements, will continue to be offered conditional admission to the UA
Center for English as a Second Language program.
This change in requirements is in response to the competitive nature of
international admission amongst our peer institutions. In addition, we have
listened to our academic community as well as prospective students, their
parents and sponsors from a variety of countries who believe our
high-quality, research-driven institution is worthy of increased
requirements to ensure academically prepared and fully English proficient
students entering our degree-granting programs.
If you have questions regarding these changes, please contact Sergio Ayala,
International Recruitment Manager, at ayalas at email.arizona.edu. Thank you
for your support.
