Tuesday Morning Notes

January 28, 2014

FROM THE DIRECTOR - Cooperative Extension Initiatives - 2014:

We currently have a number of very important issues that are at the
forefront of our work and attention in CALS Cooperative Extension (CE).
Governor Brewer's inclusion of $3.5M additional permanent funding for CE in
the State of Arizona fiscal year 2015 (FY15) budget represents a huge step
forward in our efforts to enhance the foundational funding for CE. An
additional $3.5M would provide a substantial increase in permanent state
funding to CE and allow us to address critical areas in need of program
development in concert with our strategic plan and valuable input from
stakeholders across the state. The ultimate goal of course is to see the
Governor's recommendation for this allocation to CE to become a reality
through the legislative process during this session. Thus, we continue to
work hard in an effort to continually present and support the case for CE.

We are also developing four regional events to celebrate the CE Centennial
in 2014 across the state. In addition, the CALS Faculty/Staff meeting that
is scheduled for Wednesday, 5 March will have a CE Centennial theme. We
have organized a planning and marketing committee for the overall Centennial
effort for CALS CE and we are working on a number of related projects.

A very important part of this process is to encourage faculty and staff from
all segments of CALS to engage in these Centennial events across the state.
This is important to provide exposure regarding what is going on out in the
state to people in CALS and an opportunity to interact with stakeholders out
in the state that work and engage with CALS programs. These events also
provide platforms for campus-based personnel to demonstrate the good work
that takes place across all units in CALS that is not always presented in
the CE programs in these regions.

CALS is truly a statewide college and these events serve as a nice
opportunity to get CALS personnel involved in several parts of the state.
The first event is in Yuma on 27 February and I encourage CALS personnel to
take advantage of the opportunity to sign up for the bus trip from Tucson to
Yuma that will depart on Wednesday, 26 February and return after the
conference on 27 February. Please refer to the notices below for additional
information.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR-ANR CANDIDATE SEMINARS AND FORUMS:

The following candidates will be presenting seminars and open forums for the
position of Associate Director-ANR over the next two days:

All interested faculty and staff are welcome to attend. The seminars will
be recorded and can be viewed live at
http://elluminate.oia.arizona.edu/scheduleMeetingnochair.php?sessionId=23599
67. Online participants will be able to type in questions during the
webcast.

AES CLARIFICATION:

The new organization of the Arizona Experiment Station (AES) includes Dean
Burgess serving as the AES Director. The additional title that I now carry
as the Associate Director for the AES involves only the administrative
responsibility for the experiment station sites that are external to Tucson.

There are many other administrative responsibilities associated with the AES
that also require full attention. Therefore, there is still a need for the
Associate Dean for Research to address a full set of responsibilities beyond
the experiment station sites that are external to Tucson. Accordingly, the
search continues to identify the next CALS Associate Dean for Research to
assume responsibility for the additional AES duties. Dean Burgess will make
that announcement when the incumbent to that position has been identified.

COOPERATIVE EXTENSION CENTENNIAL EVENT - YUMA:

There are only about 2 weeks left to sign up for our Cooperative Extension
Centennial Event-Yuma, scheduled in conjunction with the 2014 Southwest Ag
Summit (contact: Kurt Nolte <mailto:knolte at cals.arizona.edu> ). Ag Summit
participants are invited to attend this tour, which will include
transportation to and from Yuma, a one night hotel stay and a box lunch for
the tour. All other meals will be provided as part of your registration for
the Summit (which can be done at the Yuma Ag Summit website
<https://www.swagsummit.com/> ). Registration for the Summit ($75) is
required to participate in the Tour.

On February 26, the Cooperative Extension bus will leave UA Main Campus at
7:00 a.m. to arrive in Yuma in time for lunch and the afternoon field tour.
After a stop at the hotel, the bus will deliver attendees to the 5:30 p.m.
Ag Summit reception at Arizona Western College. After attending the
Southwest Ag Summit on February 27 [7:00-3:30], the bus will leave Yuma at
4:00 p.m., returning to Tucson at approximately 9:00 p.m. PLEASE NOTE: The
Harvest Dinner on February 27 is not part of the general Summit
registration. The bus will leave for Tucson before the Harvest Dinner.

Please contact Steven Crofts at scrofts at cals.arizona.edu by February 7 if
you plan on attending this event.

In addition, the 2014 schedule for additional statewide Centennial

FOCUS ON FACULTY:

Paul Brown is now serving as the lead faculty and project leader at the
Karsten Turf Center. In this capacity Dr. Brown will be coordinating the
management and operations with all project leaders working at the Turf
Center and linking facility operations with the Campus Ag Center
administration and personnel.

Kay Hongu was featured in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior,
Volume 46, Issue 1, pp. 43-53, January/February 2014, with her article
titled <http://www.jneb.org/article/S1499-4046%2813%2900118-8/abstract>
"Field Assessments for Obesity Prevention in Children and Adults: Physical
Activity, Fitness, and Body Composition." This report will assist educators
in identifying and selecting appropriate field-based assessments for
measurement of physical activity, physical fitness, and body composition for
children and adults.

As of January 1, Kurt Nolte is serving as the Regional Director for
Southwest Arizona which includes both La Paz and Yuma counties. So,
collectively, Kurt has administrative responsibilities for La Paz, Yuma and
the Yuma Ag Center.

COMPLETING YOUR APR:

The following is being offered by Dan McDonald as follow up to the recent
webinar).

Link for Webinar SLIDES: Please visit the Faculty Review page on the
Extension website (https://extension.arizona.edu/faculty-review) to view the
Completing Your APR webinar slides.

APR Character Limit: The character limit for this year's APRs will be
increased from 25,000 to 26,000 characters (not including spaces). The UA
Vitae system formats some content areas differently than the APROL system,
which may result in more characters than in the past. Here is how you can
check the number of characters:

1.	Login to UA Vitae (you can do this from the Faculty Review page:
https://extension.arizona.edu/faculty-review
2.	Go to My Data tab in UA Vitae
3.	Click on Vita under My Reports box
4.	Under Details, select CALS APR CV and then Begin Spring 2013 and End
Winter 2013, then hit Refresh Report
5.	Your APR will come up and you can check your formatting, etc.
6.	In the upper right hand corner, look for the icons to Printer, Word
or PDF. Pick the Word icon and it will download a copy of your APR in Word
where you can see the number of characters.

Creative and Scholarship Work: A question was raised during the webinar as
to what constitutes "numerous" creative and scholarly works. The content on
the following link
(http://cals.arizona.edu/dean/facultyworkload/extension.pdf) provides some
guidance on that matter.

Professional Development: In the past, in order to receive a score of 3 or
higher under Professional Development, one must have submitted a
Professional Development Career Plan of Action Form. It is no longer
necessary to complete that form, so that stipulation is no longer a factor
in scoring APRs.

ARIZONA 4-H DESIGN WINS NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY COMPETITION:

Each year, NIFA and National 4-H Council sponsor an open competition for
land-grant universities and their 4-H programs to enter a design concept for
the National 4-H Youth Science Day Experiment which is held in October.
This year, the experiment submitted by Arizona 4-H, along with a number of
collaborators, was selected as the final winner. Titled "The Totally
Amazing, Incredible Food Lift," the experiment provides 3 activities that
include work in aerospace engineering, math, food and nutrition science, and
consumer economics. The experiment addresses issues of world food
insecurity by utilizing a somewhat fictional scenario of a population of
people stranded on a Pacific atoll that are starving and in desperate need
of food relief. The final concept design included UA Cooperative Extension
and Pima County 4-H, engineers from Raytheon, Inc. here in Tucson, faculty
in the UA Colleges of Engineering and Education, the CALS Department of
Nutritional Sciences, the UA STEM Learning Center, Flandrau Planetarium,
Northern Arizona University's Center for Science Teaching & Learning, and
the Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence. We are excited to have our
design selected as the winner entry this year, and look forward to working
with National 4-H to develop a marketing package and national roll-out for
the experiment. Our winning team also receives a cash prize of $20,000.

a state, regional, national, or international educational need; 2) involve a
creative or non-traditional approach toward addressing that need that can
serve as a model to others; 3) encourage and facilitate better working
relationships in the university science and education community, as well as
between universities and the private sector, to enhance program quality and
supplement available resources; and 4) result in benefits that will likely
transcend the project duration and USDA support. For more information, go
