Governor Brewer’s inclusion of $3.5M additional permanent funding for CE in the State of Arizona fiscal year 2015 (FY15) budget represents a huge step forward in our efforts to enhance the foundational funding for CE. An additional $3.5M would provide a substantial increase in permanent state funding to CE and allow us to address critical areas in need of program development in concert with our strategic plan and valuable input from stakeholders across the state. The ultimate goal of course is to see the Governor’s recommendation for this allocation to CE to become a reality through the legislative process during this session. Thus, we continue to work hard in an effort to continually present and support the case for CE. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>We are also developing four regional events to celebrate the CE Centennial in 2014 across the state. In addition, the CALS Faculty/Staff meeting that is scheduled for Wednesday, 5 March will have a CE Centennial theme. We have organized a planning and marketing committee for the overall Centennial effort for CALS CE and we are working on a number of related projects. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>A very important part of this process is to encourage faculty and staff from all segments of CALS to engage in these Centennial events across the state. This is important to provide exposure regarding what is going on out in the state to people in CALS and an opportunity to interact with stakeholders out in the state that work and engage with CALS programs. These events also provide platforms for campus-based personnel to demonstrate the good work that takes place across all units in CALS that is not always presented in the CE programs in these regions. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>CALS is truly a statewide college and these events serve as a nice opportunity to get CALS personnel involved in several parts of the state. The first event is in Yuma on 27 February and I encourage CALS personnel to take advantage of the opportunity to sign up for the bus trip from Tucson to Yuma that will depart on Wednesday, 26 February and return after the conference on 27 February. The additional title that I now carry as the Associate Director for the AES involves <i>only</i> the administrative responsibility for the experiment station sites that are external to Tucson. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>There are many other administrative responsibilities associated with the AES that also require full attention. Therefore, there is still a need for the Associate Dean for Research to address a full set of responsibilities beyond the experiment station sites that are external to Tucson. Accordingly, the search continues to identify the next CALS Associate Dean for Research to assume responsibility for the additional AES duties. This year, the experiment submitted by Arizona 4-H, along with a number of collaborators, was selected as the final winner. Titled "The Totally Amazing, Incredible Food Lift," the experiment provides 3 activities that include work in aerospace engineering, math, food and nutrition science, and consumer economics. The experiment addresses issues of world food insecurity by utilizing a somewhat fictional scenario of a population of people stranded on a Pacific atoll that are starving and in desperate need of food relief. The final concept design included UA Cooperative Extension and Pima County 4-H, engineers from Raytheon, Inc. here in Tucson, faculty in the UA Colleges of Engineering and Education, the CALS Department of Nutritional Sciences, the UA STEM Learning Center, Flandrau Planetarium, Northern Arizona University's Center for Science Teaching & Learning, and the Arizona Center for Afterschool Excellence. We are excited to have our design selected as the winner entry this year, and look forward to working with National 4-H to develop a marketing package and national roll-out for the experiment.
