Tuesday Morning Notes

October 29, 2013

FROM THE DIRECTOR:

We often hear the claims that we live in the "information age" and as such
we have many ways in which we can communicate. In Cooperative Extension
(CE) we have the responsibility to develop capacities to communicate along
many lines and in many ways. As with the transmission of this weekly
bulletin, we commonly communicate these days electronically. One of the
principle vehicles that we have in communicating is through our website
systems and CE does have the responsibility for developing and maintaining
accurate and functional website connections. In an effort to do that, CE
recently recognized the need to develop an upgrade and improvement in our
website presence and we have recently embarked upon the process of
developing and implementing an entirely new website structure. Accordingly,
a new website for CALS CE was released on 30 September.

With the launch of any new website or similar structure, there are commonly
a few problems or glitches that need to be worked out and resolved and in
fact this is a continual process in the development and maintenance of an
effective and vigorous website presence. True to form, CE has experienced
more than our fair share of challenges associated with the release of our
new website. I do know that our website team in CALS CE has been working
diligently to address the problems that have arisen with release of this new
website and I do know that they are making very good progress in the
reparations. I also recognize and fully appreciate the frustrations that
many people have in an effort to maintain their program presence through
this website with the difficulties associated with this process. I do not
fail to see that the ultimate responsibility for this CE website, and all
programs emanating from CE, are the responsibility of the director.
Accordingly, I accept responsibility for providing the "green light" that
initiated the release of this website on its predetermined date of 30
September. I also take responsibility for working with and supporting the
CE staff that are working hard to bring this website to the realization of
its full potential as soon as possible. I am confident that we are making
good progress in the reparations on this new website and any inherent
problems that it now carries and I'm also confident that we will have a
better website presence in the end and a much improved vehicle from which to
communicate and deliver information regarding our programs.

I want to express my appreciation to all those who are working hard to
develop and maintain this website, which is extremely complex for an
organization like CE, and for all of the folks that have program materials
that are presented and accessible through this website presence as we move
through this initial process of development and implementation. I also ask
for continued cooperation in our effort to bring this website to its full
capacity in as short a time frame as possible. We are now one month out
from its initial release, good progress is being made, a lot of hard work
still yet to be done, and I have been assured that we will reach a
reasonable point of development very soon. Hopefully we will soon be to a
point where we can realize the full benefits of this new website and an
enhanced capacity to maintain openness and accessibility to our programs for
the many stakeholders that we serve.

FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:

New Globe Tractor Supply Store Places 5th in Clover Sales - As some of you
may know, Tractor Supply company has recently moved into Arizona and is
opening several stores around the state. As a supporter of 4-H, they have a
"Paper Clover" campaign whereby shoppers can purchase a paper clover to show
their support for 4-H and the money goes to the clubs and the 4-H program.
The Globe/Miami Tractor Supply Store placed 5th out of 1200 stores
nationwide for the number of clover sales recently. Congratulations to
everyone on such a great impact. Arizona 4-H, 4-H clubs and local programs
all stand to benefit from the opening of new Tractor Supply stores.
