Tuesday Morning Notes
November 26, 2013
FROM THE DIRECTOR - Accountability & Marketing:
In my recent travels around Arizona I have had the opportunity to visit with
and listen to people from many sectors of our state and hear their views
regarding what they would like to see from CALS Cooperative Extension (CE).
Those viewpoints vary tremendously, of course, but there are several lines
of commonality that I consistently hear.
First of all, any discussions of current CE programs and the prospects
associated with additional permanent funding through the pending decision
package quite commonly directs the conversation towards the topic of
"accountability." Very commonly people out in the state are quite
interested in "What are we doing with the funding today that is allocated
from the state and federal sources?"
The accountability issue is valid and certainly reasonable. I can
comfortably assure people that our intentions are to be fully accountable
and effective with the appropriated funds that provide the foundation upon
which CE exists and operates. As a public institution we absolutely must be
accountable for both our fiscal and programmatic responsibilities.
When the conversation turns to programs and program delivery around the
state, I commonly encounter a second line of consistency that I hear from
many people. First, it is not at all uncommon to find a lack of
identification regarding the connection between programs that people might
be familiar with and understanding that they are actually a part of CE
and/or CALS. Thus, people might be familiar with the program but have no
idea that it is actually a part of CE. Second, and perhaps even more
disturbing, is the fact that in many cases people are totally unaware that
we have programs in areas of their interest. Both of these issues speak to
our marketing efforts and program branding or lack thereof.
With respect to the issue of marketing, I have many people around me
advocating for the development of new positions in CE with specific
responsibilities in marketing and I can see the need for a concerted
marketing effort. However, I want to be sure we are working most
effectively with the marketing experts that we have on board already. I
must also consider the fact that we have nearly 600 people working in CALS
CE and I see each and every individual as an agent of marketing with the
distinct responsibility of at least marketing and branding their own
programs or areas of operation and making the clear connection with CE.
Thus, a major connection concerning accountability with regard to the
funding we currently have appropriated to CE must be considered in relation
to our ability to communicate effectively the programs that we do have
operating in the state and the relationship to CE. I certainly carry the
responsibility of making these connections and making our case for
accountability and I also contend that every employee in CALS CE has that
responsibility and need to make sure that stakeholders and communities
understand their connections to CE and CALS and the excellent programs that
we direct. That is a fundamental first step that is needed universally
across all CE programs.
I want to wish everyone a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
FOCUS ON FACULTY:
Stacey Bealmear gave a webinar focused on work/life balance to the eXtension
working group for master gardener coordinators last Wednesday. It focused
on strategies for balancing work, decreasing stress and increasing enjoyment
in your personal and professional life. Click here

ARIZONA 4-H RECOGNIZED FOR OUTSTANDING INTERNATIONAL WORK:
Arizona 4-H was recently recognized at the annual meeting of the States' 4-H
International Exchange Program in San Antonio with the Outstanding Program
Quality Award for our participation in the 2013 international exchange. We
hosted 11 young people and a chaperone from Japan this past summer, and we
also sent one 4-H member from Arizona to Japan for the 8-week intensive
language program and host family stay. We appreciate all those who assisted
with the exchange program this past year and look forward to another success
hosting experience in 2014.
NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION STUDY:
You are invited to participate in an NSF-sponsored DataONE research study.
Your responses will contribute to the understanding of how scientists
currently create, preserve, manage, and share their data as well as how they
are involved in education concerning these topics. Even if you do not
participate in the survey yourself, you can forward the survey link to other
faculty, researchers, lecturers, post-doctoral associates, and graduate
students in sciences, technology/engineering, health sciences, and social
sciences. All scientists, no matter where in the world they work, are
invited to participate. Click here
<http://tinyurl.com/DataONEScientistsSurvey> to open the survey. For
questions, contact Carol Tenopir <mailto:ctenopir at utk.edu> , University of
Tennessee.
