Tuesday Morning Notes

November 19, 2013

FROM THE DIRECTOR - Professional Development:

Working in a university you commonly find most people are strong champions
of education and appreciate both the personal and social benefits of it.
Similarly, people that we work with are usually avid life-long learners on
both personal and professional levels. Professionally, it is a constant
need and challenge to maintain our areas of expertise and keep "up to date"
on new knowledge, information, and developments in our areas of study.
There are several means by which we can pursue professional development, one
of which is to maintain an affiliation with an appropriate professional
society or association and attend professional meetings.

Being engaged in a professional society, reading and contributing to the
literature, and attending professional meetings can provide a stimulating
environment conducive to our professional development. However, this manner
of professional development can only be productive if approached in an
active as opposed to a passive manner. We work in an organization with an
implicit expectation that people will maintain a positive trajectory in
their professional development. Accordingly, professionals in CE are
expected to be sufficiently motivated to take the initiative to find an
appropriate professional association, cover the expenses associated with
their membership, and engage in activities and duties associated with these
organizations or societies.

I encourage all faculty and staff to be active within the professional
society associated with their area of expertise, to attend professional
meetings when possible, and then deliver and present a product from their
program at those meetings with the opportunity for feedback from their
peers. This exchange provides the best opportunity for interaction,
productive engagement, and professional development.

It takes time and money to attend professional meetings and faculty and
staff in Cooperative Extension (CE) should be alert to utilizing their time
and financial resources in a most effective manner. Taking an active
approach to seeking and testing new information in a professional
environment is an important part of our continual professional development.
