Tuesday Morning Notes

November 12, 2013

FROM THE DIRECTOR - Smith Lever Centennial Program Plans:

Last week we conducted some Cooperative Extension (CE) update meetings and
briefings with all CALS unit leaders (county and center directors,
department heads and school directors). During this time we developed some
of the preliminary plans for celebrating the Smith Lever Act Centennial in
2014.

We have decided to conduct four regional programs over the course of 2014
for the north, central, southwest, and southeast regions of the state. The
counties associated with each region include: 1) north - Apache, Coconino,
Gila, Mohave, Navajo, and Yavapai; 2) central - Maricopa and Pinal; 3)
southwest - La Paz and Yuma; and 4) southeast - Cochise, Graham, Greenlee,
Pima and Santa Cruz.

The county directors in each region will serve on the planning committees
along with any center directors that reside within the regions and
additional school directors/department heads. These unit leaders will then
invite additional CE faculty and staff to serve along with stakeholders and
members of the communities to develop the program. Thus, we formed four
committees at this session last week just to give you an idea of what kind
of intense administration was going on!

The intention is to have CE participation across all types of CALS units and
also local stakeholder participation in each program that will provide a
distinct regional flavor. Transportation and lodging arrangements will be
developed to accommodate travel for faculty and staff from the UA campus to
the various sites. As these committees go to work we will learn more about
the details associated with each regional program as it develops.

FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:

Arizona Project WET (APW) announced the launch of its new website
<https://arizonawet.arizona.edu/> yesterday. The new site highlights the
many different programs and services APW offers, and focuses on its mission
of developing water stewardship and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics) literacy in three ways: 1) providing teacher professional
development focused on 21st century skills, 2) offering direct student
outreach that delivers or extends classroom learning, and 3) directly
engaging the community in K-12 education. "We hope this new resource will
help people understand the programs and opportunities available to them
through Arizona Project WET," said Kerry Schwartz, APW Director. "Our new
website is informative and easy to navigate, and clarifies the many programs
that we deliver to meet our mission." The new website features APW's
individual programs, including the Arizona Water Festival Program, APW
Teacher Academies, the Water Investigations Program, the School Water Audit
Program, and the Water Scene Investigations Program.
