Tuesday Morning Notes
June 18, 2013
FROM THE DIRECTOR:
In recent months I have both spoken and written to the issue of "balance"
from a range of different perspectives. For example, I have spoken to the
importance of balance in responsibility/authority for our professional
positions, the importance of balance in central administrative authority and
administrative authority distributed to units, etc. One other aspect of
balance that is very important for us as professionals is the balance
between our professional and personal lives.
On one hand, most of the professional positions associated with any
university, including the University of Arizona, and certainly including
CALS Cooperative Extension, carry with them a rather high degree of
professional freedom to execute the duties associated with their position
descriptions. In my experience, the general tendency for professionals in
positions of this type is to apply themselves in a diligent and responsible
manner. Of course there are always the exceptions, but I have generally
found most professionals in a university environment work hard and are
highly self-motivated. However, in an effort to maintain a "fresh" and
energetic perspective, which is conducive to creativity and productivity, I
believe it is important for each of us to strike a reasonable balance in our
devotion of time and energies to work and personally-related activities and

lities.
This time of year it is common to see people make an effort to take a break
from their professional responsibilities and activities and pursue some free
time with family and friends in what is often referred to as "vacation" or
"personal" time. I openly encourage people to take some time, to step back,
and step away from the day-to-day professional duties that we all carry in
an effort to have a break and hopefully return to our work afterwards with a
renewed sense of energy and motivation. It is usually healthy for us to do
this in a balanced way both mentally as well as physically and it's always
the balance of time devoted to these extracurricular duties that becomes the
important issue.
Therefore, I encourage everyone to find a place in your professional
calendar where you can take some time away and enjoy the time with family,
friends, and activities that are vital to us all. Upon immediate reflection
on these comments, I can appreciate the value in taking some time off.
Accordingly, your trusty correspondent is going on break and I will return
with some new ideas in a few weeks. Adios!
