Tuesday Morning Notes

June 11, 2013

FROM THE DIRECTOR:

We always continue to learn and grow through our work and experiences. This
past week I learned that if I ever want to know if anyone reads these
illustrious comments I send out through Tuesday Morning Notes, all I need to
do to test that question is to simply suggest something about reorganization
of CALS Cooperative Extension. Based on the responses from my 4 June
comments, it seems that I have found a lively topic for many folks in CALS.
I can also say that I very much appreciate the good suggestions and comments
that have been offered in the past week. In review of this input, I think
it would be appropriate for me to provide a few points today for
clarification and/or reinforcement of the message I attempted to communicate
last week.

Several points worthy of noting regarding this proposed reorganization plan
for county-based units in Cooperative Extension include the following:

*	This is a proposed reorganization plan and not a final plan for
implementation.
*	The Extension Administration Team (EAT) is open to suggestions and
ideas relative to this proposal.
*	The basic objectives associated with this proposed reorganization
are: 1) improve the capacity to deliver programs, and 2) improve efficiency
in business operations and administrative support for all units across the
state.
*	Maintain a Cooperative Extension office in every county.
*	Campus-based (departments/schools) and all personnel based at the
centers are encouraged to review and comment on this proposed reorganization
plan.

*	It is important to recognize that all programs in Cooperative
Extension should be delivered out in the state, that is, in counties, in
collaboration with county-based faculty and staff.

*	Financial gains can be realized in the long term but not expected in
the short term.
*	Implementation of any future reorganization plan will be done in a
stepwise manner.

Once again, I want to thank everyone who has provided constructive reviews,
comments, and suggestions. This proposed reorganization plan will certainly
be subject to some modification and revision before any type of
implementation is considered and I fully intend to communicate any final
plan that is developed prior to implementation. If you do have comments or
questions relative to this proposed reorganization plan, please feel free to
communicate your ideas to anyone on the EAT group, a unit director, or
directly to my office.

FOCUS ON FACULTY:

Sharon B. Megdal, Director of the UA Water Resources Research Center (WRRC),
has been elected to a three-year term on the Board of Directors of the
Western Rural Development Center (WRDC). Her term will begin January 2014
and run through December 2016. The WRDC aims to help rural communities
thrive economically and become self-sustaining through collaboration with
its public and private sector partners, and to promote excellence in
research, education and Extension for the prosperity of western rural
communities.

Congratulations to Liz Sparks and Dan MacDonald, Pima County Cooperative
Extension, for being one of 9 recipients of second year funding for the
Eat4Health grant from National 4-H Council. 4-H and United Healthcare have
partnered to launch Eat4Health to engage people at the community level to
take on the challenge of living healthy lives. Through Eat4-Health, teen
health ambassadors and 4-H professionals partner with local organizations to
develop community-focused events that engage youth in learning about healthy
lifestyles. Offering interactive educational activities, youth are guided
in developing positive perspectives on health and nutrition - ultimately
helping them to make smarter choices.

FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:

Strengthening UA's Role in Local Food Systems - On May 14, 86 people
representing the University of Arizona, food banks, community gardens and
other organizations gathered in Tucson to explore potential for
collaboration on projects supporting local food systems in Arizona.
Participants worked in teams to envision the optimal local food system,
identify barriers to creating this system and share what they can offer
others to overcome these barriers. Dr. Gary Nabhan opened the summit with a
discussion on the current state of Arizona food systems and Dr. Jeff
Silvertooth provided closing remarks. Thank you to everyone that
participated. If you would like to be included in future discussions or are
looking for collaborators on local food system projects, contact Kelly Young
<mailto:kyoung at cals.arizona.edu> or Jesse Davenport
<mailto:jmdavenp at cals.arizona.edu> to be added to the directory.

AZ Women in Agriculture Conference - The 17th Annual AZ Women in Agriculture
Conference was held on June 6-7. This year's theme, "Leaders: Yesterday,
Today and Tomorrow," was developed to recognize the conference celebration
of Arizona's 4-H Centennial. Monica Pastor represents CALS on the
conference planning committee. Over 100 women and a few men were educated
by a variety of speakers. Dr. Kirk Astroth gave the welcome from the
College and Bryan Chadd provided two excellent presentations - "Arizona 4-H
at 100" and "Getting to Know and Feeling Comfortable with the Leader in
You." Each county was invited to recognize adults who have given their time
to 4-H. The following were recognized for this achievement:

*	Cochise - Ronnie (posthumously) and Steve Fenn
*	Coconino - Connie and Nick Lipinski
*	Gila - Sue Hunsaker and Judy Mann
*	Greenlee - Sissy Fischler and Daisy Mae Cannon
*	La Paz - Karen Sellers and Victoria McGuire
*	Maricopa - Jacque Accomazzo and Kelly Bryant (posthumously)
*	Pinal - Oliver Anderson and Everett Rhodes
*	Yavapai - Angela Teskey Peterson and John Olsen
*	Yuma - Debbie Townsend and Candy Ott
