For example, I have spoken to the importance of balance in responsibility/authority for our professional positions, the importance of balance in central administrative authority and administrative authority distributed to units, etc. One other aspect of balance that is very important for us as professionals is the balance between our professional and personal lives. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>On one hand, most of the professional positions associated with any university, including the University of Arizona, and certainly including CALS Cooperative Extension, carry with them a rather high degree of professional freedom to execute the duties associated with their position descriptions. In my experience, the general tendency for professionals in positions of this type is to apply themselves in a diligent and responsible manner. Of course there are always the exceptions, but I have generally found most professionals in a university environment work hard and are highly self-motivated. However, in an effort to maintain a “fresh” and energetic perspective, which is conducive to creativity and productivity, I believe it is important for each of us to strike a reasonable balance in our devotion of time and energies to work and personally-related activities and </span><!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shapetype id="_x0000_t75" coordsize="21600,21600" o:spt="75" o:preferrelative="t" path="m@4@5l@4@11@9@11@9@5xe" filled="f" stroked="f">

I openly encourage people to take some time, to step back, and step away from the day-to-day professional duties that we all carry in an effort to have a break and hopefully return to our work afterwards with a renewed sense of energy and motivation. It is usually healthy for us to do this in a balanced way both mentally as well as physically and it’s always the balance of time devoted to these extracurricular duties that becomes the important issue.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'><o:p> </o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"'>Therefore, I encourage everyone to find a place in your professional calendar where you can take some time away and enjoy the time with family, friends, and activities that are vital to us all.
