Tuesday Morning Notes
January 17, 2012
FOCUS ON FACULTY:
Several Arizona faculty members had articles published in the December 2011
issue of the Journal of Extension:
* Assessing the Culture of Fresh Produce Safety Within A Leafy Green
Producing Community by Kurt Nolte, Charles Sanchez & Jorge Fonseca
* Social Network Analysis: A Tool to Improve Understanding of
Collaborative Management Groups by Adam Springer & J. E. de Steiguer
FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:
School IPM in the 21st Century - UA faculty serve on the National IPM School
Working Group providing support to schools practicing Integrated Pest
Management. With support from a US EPA grant (2010 PRIA 2 grant), the team
created two new documents
<http://www.ipminstitute.org/school_ipm_2015/ipm_business_case.pdf> The
Business Case for Integrated Pest Management in Schools: Cutting Costs and
Increasing Benefits and
<http://www.ipminstitute.org/school_ipm_2015/ipm_asthma_document.pdf>
Reducing your Child's Asthma using Integrated Pest Management: A Practical
Home Guide for Parents. The team also offers a free monthly School IPM 2015
Newsletter <http://www.ipminstitute.org/school_ipm_2015/Newsletters.htm> ,
geared toward school staff and those working in and with schools. For more
information, go to the School IPM 2015 website
<http://www.ipminstitute.org/school_ipm_2015/index.htm> or contact Dawn
Gouge <mailto:dhgouge at cals.arizona.edu> (520.568.2273).
Living Sustainably - It's Your Choice - The National Network for Sustainable
Living Education (NNSLE), an initiative of ANREP, has completed its work on
"Living Sustainably-It's Your Choice" - an online course hosted by eXtension
for anyone with an interest in sustainability. Area Agents Mark Apel and
Erik Glenn were an instrumental part of the team that put this course
together. In addition, a new publication from NNSLE is also available
entitled "Sustainable Living Handbook - A Citizen's Guide to Thoughtful
Action" which is an updated and revised version of NNSLE's "Living
Sustainably-It's Your Choice" - a booklet first released in 2008. If you
are interested in hard copies of this booklet or the online course, contact
Mark Apel <mailto:mapel at cals.arizona.edu> or Erik Glenn
<mailto:erikg at cals.arizona.edu> .
LEGAL COUNSEL:
On rare occasions, UA Extension employees may be contacted by outside
attorneys seeking their input and factual knowledge related to issue in
litigation. UACE employees should always refer outside attorneys wanting to
discuss their UACE work to the Office of General Counsel rather than
engaging in any conversation with them. All the employee needs to say is "I
am represented by legal counsel and you may contact them directly" and then
provide the OGC's main number (520-621-3175). Feel free to contact the
Office of General Counsel if you have questions.
I'd also like to repeat some information originally sent out in a 3D memo on
service of subpoenas. Campus offices and employees generally should NOT
accept service of subpoenas for University records. This includes subpoena
for records or personal appearance. Process servers should be directed to
the Office of General Counsel (Administration 103). If you receive a
subpoena in the mail (or if someone in your office accepts a subpoena in
spite of these instructions) or if the subpoena is for your personal
appearance in a deposition or a trial in a matter related to the University,
you may accept the subpoena and then the Office of the General Counsel and
fax the subpoena to 520.621.9001 (noting date served and person accepting).
If an individual claims to be a law enforcement officer requesting immediate
access to records, you should also refer that individual to the above
office. You should not accept a subpoena for personal appearance on behalf
of anyone else other than yourself. If you have questions about service of
a subpoena, service of other legal documents, or any other legal requests
for records or information, contact Kate Adams
<mailto:adamsk at email.arizona.edu> in the Office of the General Counsel
(520.621.3175).
TECH TIP OF THE WEEK - SECURE WEB CONNECTIONS and SSL/TLS CERTIFICATES:
In addition to using the HTTPS protocol, another component of a secure
connection to a webpage, is the website's SSL or TLS Certificate. While
negotiating a secure connection to a webpage, the web browser will request
the website's SSL or TLS Certificate. If the website's Certificate is
valid, then the secure connection is allowed to be established, and a locked
padlock symbol will be displayed to indicate the connection to the website
is both encrypted and "trusted". If an Extended Validation Certificate is
in use, the address bar or a part of the address bar will also change to a
(usually) green color. Get in the habit of checking for these visual clues
in your web browser anytime you are on a webpage where personal or financial
information is to be entered to ensure you have a secure connection to that
webpage. Occasionally you might get to a webpage where the Certificate
presented is not valid or was not issued by a Certificate Authority (CA).
Most web browsers will not allow the connection to be established while some
may present a dialog box where the connection may be allowed. With few
exceptions, it is strongly recommended not to allow such untrusted
connections to proceed.
