Tuesday Morning Notes

September 20, 2011

CONTINUING RESOLUTION:

This week Congress is expected to enact H.J. Res. 79, a continuing
resolution to fund the Federal Government until November 18 as the fiscal
year expires on September 30. Both the House and the Senate are expected to
be in recess next week.

FOCUS ON FACULTY:

Mark Apel (Area Agent, Cochise County) attended the Western Planner/Four
Corners conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he was officially made the
Arizona representative to the Western Planner Resources Board. In addition
to this position, Mark is also a member of the Editorial Board for this
organization. Over 400 planners from around the west attended this year's
conference where Mark presented and moderated a session on engaging ranchers
and farmers into local planning processes.

FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:

Throughout Arizona, across the nation, and around the world, more and more
people are opting to use locally grown food items that they purchase
directly from the grower. In addition, school, neighborhood, and community
gardens have become hugely popular. Arizona Cooperative Extension agents
and specialists from several disciplines are working together to address the
many issues of local food production. The new Sustainable Agriculture Team
is focusing not only on small farm issues, but also ways to help large farm
operations become more sustainable. If you would like to know more about
what they are doing, or even join one of the working groups, contact Rick
Gibson <mailto:gibsonrd at cals.arizona.edu> or any of the team members for
more information. The Arizona Sustainable Agriculture website
<http://extension.arizona.edu/programs/sustainable-agriculture> is the
place to go for news and information on sustainable agriculture in Arizona.
