FOCUS ON FACULTY & STAFF:

Sharon Hoelscher Day has announced her retirement as of the end of November
and a celebration is planned at the UA Cooperative Extension-Maricopa County
Extension Office in Phoenix for Friday, October 21. From 3:00-5:00pm there
will be an opportunity to stop by and see Sharon on an informal basis. From
5:30-7:30pm a dinner will be held in Sharon's honor. If you wish to be
added to the invitation list for more details and/or to contribute to a
gift, contact Patty Merk <mailto:pmerk at cals.arizona.edu> (602.908.0531).

Our congratulations to Phil Jenkins, Curatorial/Museum Specialist, Senior
with the School of Plant Sciences, who will be retiring from his position
October 26. For about 20 years he has been working in the Herbarium
processing plant identifications for both faculty and the general public.

Sharon Megdal, Susanna Eden and Jackie Moxley of the Water Resources
Research Center (WRRC) have been awarded $86,567 from the U.S. Bureau of
Reclamation Landscape Conservation Cooperative funding through the
WaterSMART Program. It was one of nine projects funded across the Western
States. The two year project, Utility Guide to Rainwater/Stormwater
Harvesting As An Adaptive Response to Climate Change, will develop a
decision support tool to be used by public utilities and agencies to
evaluate suitability and cost-effectiveness of rainwater and stormwater
capture at various scales for multiple benefits. Cado Daily( Cochise County
Cooperative Extension), Jim Riley (Soil, Water & Environmental Science), and
Mike Crimmins (Climate Science Extension Specialist) are among the 10
members of the Technical Advisory Committee for the project.

Tasha Krecek-Lynch, Pam Justice, Candice Rupprecht, Kerry Schwartz, Mary Ann
Stoll and Holly Thomas-Hilburn from the Arizona Project WET team and Ashley
Fine (Yavapai County APW Facilitator) attended the first ever "Sustaining
the Blue Planet: Global Water Education Conference" in Bozeman, Montana.
The team delivered 5 presentations; 2 one-hour presentations titled "A
Different Animal: Attracting Corporate and NGO Sponsorship" and "STEM
Subject Integration: Meeting the Need with Tangible Programming" and 3
half-hour presentations titled "Destination Inquiry: Paddling Upstream,"
"Grounding Water: Building Student Understanding through Multi-Modal
Assessment" and "Riding the Wave of Student-Driven Inquiry: Terror or
Treasure." Kerry Schwartz also received a Service Award for more than 10
years as a Project WET state coordinator. Congrats Kerry!

FOCUS ON PROGRAMS:

The Agriculture Literacy Program in Maricopa County has created an online
course for K-12 teachers (both in and out-of-state) and needs your help to
share the word. Teachers can earn 45 CEUs while learning about agriculture
and teaching agriculturally-based lessons which have already been created
for them. They will choose 10 out of these 12 lessons and modify them to
make the lessons grade appropriate for their class. The only homework is to
report on the lessons taught and to comment on other teachers' postings. A
final will require them to create and teach their lesson on Arizona
specialty crops. This is a work-at-your-own-pace course, so teachers can
enroll anytime between now and February 1, 2012. Course assignments must be
completed by June 1, 2012. The cost is $200 for a certificate of completion
or $300 for 45 CEUs. You can view a flyer
<http://cals.arizona.edu/agliteracy/online_course_flyer.pdf> or enroll
through the Outreach College web site for the Incorporating Agriculture
Education into Your Classroom
<https://outreachcollege.arizona.edu/ec2k/course_listing_prof.asp?master_id=
2678&master_version=3&course_area=PRFD&course_number=IAEC&course_subtitle=00
&heading_id=87&parent_head_name=Professional%20Development> course.

TECH TIP OF THE WEEK:

If you're a county office planning to purchase new computers, be sure to
work primarily with Andy Medina <mailto:gamedina at cals.arizona.edu>
(520.626.8395) - and if Andy is unavailable, Robert Armstrong
<mailto:armstrng at cals.arizona.edu> (520.621.3872) - so that your purchases
are appropriate for business needs. Some recent purchases were made that
resulted in extra setup time and delayed delivery to a county. In
particular, computers with "Home" versions of Windows should not be
purchased; instead, Windows 7 Pro should be the system installed. Consumer
electronics stores (such as Best Buy) typically only stock computers with
Home versions. Therefore, computers purchased from these vendors are not
recommended. Vendors such as Dell will be able to include the proper
version of Windows. In addition, the warranty from an electronics store is
for one year instead of the recommended three-year warranty.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

The CALS Homecoming Weekend festivities will be kicked off with the AGCAT
Open Golf Tournament on Friday, November 4 at 7:00am at the Hilton Tucson El
Conquistador Country Club and followed by the Dean's Almost World Famous
Burrito Breakfast & Alumni Auction on Saturday, November 5 at 8:00am in the
Student Union North Ballroom. So, SAVE THE DATES!

The Tucson Village Farm will be hosting a one-of-a-kind conference on
January 21, 2012 called LIME (Learn, Inspire, Move, Eat). We are currently
seeking presenters to host workshops for kids, adults and/or teachers that
focus on nutrition education, healthy food preparation, culinary skills,
gardening, fitness education or food advocacy. If you are interested in
hosting a workshop, go to the LIME Conference web site
<http://www.tucsonvillagefarm.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/LIME-CALL-FOR-P
RESENTERS1.pdf> and return the application to LIMEconference at gmail.com by
September 30. For more information, contact Natalie Shepp (520.349.3224).
