Tuesday Morning Notes
September 13, 2011
FOCUS ON FACULTY:
This year's National Association of County Agriculture Agents annual
conference was August 7-11 in Overland Park, Kansas. Ten representatives
from Arizona were in attendance: Dean Fish, Stacey Bealmear, Jeff Schalau,
Kurt Nolte, Linda Masters, Kristen Wagner, Ayman Mostafa, Rick Gibson,
Elisabeth Alden, Rob Grumbles. This year's Distinguished Service Award for
Arizona went to Jeff Schalau and the Achievement Award went to Stacey
Bealmear. Arizona was also awarded first place for adding the most new
members of any state - 16 new members.
SENATE APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE UPDATE:
We all have been anxious to know how the budget approval process in
Washington is unfolding, especially related to NIFA funding. On September
7, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved the FY2012 Agriculture
Appropriations Bill which includes funding for NIFA and Extension. In this
approved version, most NIFA lines remained largely unchanged from their
FY2011 enacted levels and in the case of Smith-Lever funds, increased
slightly over the FY2011 level. Of course, nothing yet is final, but
thankfully the Senate Appropriations Committee has thus far supported near
level funding. For more information, go to the

Appropriations Committee Approves FY 2012 Funding for USDA" article.
